Things You Only Understand If You Were Born And Raised In Philadelphia

"Let's go to Rita's WOODer ice, and get some jimmies on our ice cream!"

Things You Only Understand If You Were Born And Raised In Philadelphia

Philadelphia — The City of Brotherly Love.

My home. My city.

Some people just think of Philadelphia as a crime infested city, but it is so much more than that!

We have some things in our city that only we understand, and are proud of. Many people want to leave, but I love my big home!

WOODer:

Noun: clear liquid that is used for drinking, bathing, cleaning, etc.

Also refer to Tail (towel), beggles (bagel), Iggles (Eagles),Winduh (window)

Most Americans know of this as water, but with our “accents”, it sounds like we are saying something about what trees are made of.

It’s WOODER ICE, not Italian ice

Rita’s Water Ice and other shops are a Summer staple in Philly. It sounds redundant, I know, but we just don’t say Italian ice.

A cheesesteak is something you always order when out to eat.

Also, a soft pretzel when on the go, and you eat TastyKakes for breakfast.

Mummers

A New Year’s Day tradition — Mummers are people dressed up who parade around center city during the NY day parade.

Youse

How we say “you all”, referring to a group of people

“Down the shore”

We never say that we are just going to the beach. It’s always “down the shore”, which is ironic because Jersey is next to us, not below us.

The Jersey Shore is THE place to hang out in the Summer, everyone you know is there and you never get tired of it

Downtown is also referred as Center City

Jimmies

No, it is not a nickname for someone named James. It is what we put on our ice cream. (A.K.A. sprinkles)

It’s a hoagie, not a sub or hero sandwich

Win or lose, we support our sports teams

And don’t talk bad about them either, cause our “Philly attitude” will come out

We have all tried to run up the Art Museum steps like Rocky, and have failed

The Boulevard

Everyone knows which boulevard you are referring to, Roosevelt Blvd. The only street no one in Philly wants to drive on, besides 95.

WaWa

The best thing about living in this city. It is not just a convenience store, it is a place that every Philadelphian can’t live without, and has just about every food product possible.

SEPTA

The worst thing about living in this city. The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority is a bus and train company that runs all through SE Pennsylvania, although many people take it, I never see one happy person aboard it.

You know every word to The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air song because it’s about your city.

We may talk weird, and may not be the cleanest or nicest city, but we are great, and I would miss this place!

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
