If you're a journalism major, you know that it's easy to get some criticism from other people about it. While a lot of people thing journalism is an 'easy major', it's definitely not what it seems. Little do people know that you could be up all night perfecting a paper like nobody's business, or you are constantly trying to keep up with current events and breaking news every second. Compared to other majors, journalism is an extremely unique subject to major in, and it provides a ton of job opportunities for the future. However, if you're not a journalism major, you may not understand the struggles that us journalism major's face everyday.
1. "You're a journalism major? That must be so easy!"
Surprise, it's actually not. Journalism might just seem like it's all a bunch of creative writing, but this is a total misconception. Journalism does require a lot of creative thinking, but it also requires a lot of time, effort, and skill. Sure, if most of us journalists took a chemistry or biology class, we would have no idea what's going on. However, that doesn't mean that our journalism or reporting classes would be a piece of cake for you."Why don't you ever have tests?"
2. "Why don't you ever have tests?
I definitely have tests in a handful of my classes, but not all of them. However, my version of a test or a final is usually a 10-page paper. While most people have plenty of tests during finals week, I'm constantly listening to my music playlists and cranking out multiple papers. Writing papers is not as easy as it seems. Once you get to the eighth page of the paper, you're completely drained. Personally, I would much rather write papers constantly than have to study for multiple tests. Writing is just what we do best.
3. "What are you going to do with that major?"
Actually, there are plenty of job opportunities for journalism majors. Whether it's working as an editor, copywriter, reporter, or even working at a newspaper, it's a pretty useful thing to major in. Having creative people employed who have excellent writing skills could be extremely important to a business. And, with social media blowing up these days, one could even be a social media specialist and promote their company!
4. "Could you edit/look over my paper for me?"
When you're a journalism major, you are known to have some of the best writing skills. I actually LOVE editing people's papers. Personally, my favorite thing to do is add commas to people's work. Not only is editing papers fun, but it's a great way to put these editing skills to the test!
