Christmas is a wonderful time of the year. It is filled with hot chocolate, time with family, Christmas movies, and opening presents. Christmas is also a time where struggles are shown the most. Some people are trying to make it through the holidays, parents not being able to give their children gifts, older people lacking visitations from family, and some not knowing when their next meal will be. Although Christmas is a time to receiving gifts, it is also a time to give gifts. Giving for Christmas does not always mean spending a lot of money. There are several ways to donate for Christmas and some of them include just donating your time. Here are 5 ways to donate this Christmas and show your love.

1. Soup Kitchen

Volunteering at a soup kitchen is an easy way to donate your time. Volunteering at a soup kitchen gives you an opportunity to get to know others in your community, have great conversations, and support a good cause. Some families are not able to have a Christmas dinner and soup kitchens believe everyone should have that opportunity to prove that for their children. Parents bring their children with them and the children usually love to interact with the volunteers. Look for a local soup kitchen and contact them to see how you can help.

2. Operation Christmas Child

Operation Christmas Child requires only a small shoebox full of Christmas gifts. The gifts may include clothes, toys, and hygiene products. You can go to the Operation Christmas Child website ( https://www.samaritanspurse.org/operation-christmas-child/drop-off-locations/) and type in your zip code to find the closest location. You will get information about the child's age, sex, clothing/shoe size, and other gifts they would like. The company asks that you also pay $7 with your shoebox to cover the shipping fee.

3. Visit Your Local Humane Society

Humane Societies are always in need of volunteers. You can volunteer your time or supplies. The Humane Society is in constant need of food, blankets, beds, and cages. The dogs also need to be loved on and played with. Volunteers are always needed and welcomed so contact your local humane society to see what you can do.

4. Visit a Nursing Home

Visiting a nursing home is a cheap and inexpensive way to give back this Christmas. You can call a local nursing home and ask if you can make a visit. You can bring small gifts to the patients, sing a song, and just spend time with them. Holidays are the most painful time of the year and you can show them that they are cared about. So head out to a nursing home and show some love.

I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
