You may have already guessed that my most recent trip to New Orleans, Louisiana, was for the notable Mardi Gras. If you've ever considered going or just love your small town parade a little too much, you have to make the trip! And when you do, make sure you--
1. Walk Everywhere
This one may be an unpopular opinion, but seriously do it. You get to see so much more that this amazing city has to offer when you take your time, breath the fresh air and walk! Now I'm not saying walk alone because that's not a good idea anywhere; however, the Central Business District and French Quarter are within a few mile radius of each other, so get a group and go explore the old-fashioned way.
2. Go To Riverwalk
While you are on that walk I recommended, go to Riverwalk, which is along the Mississippi River. On Lundi Gras (also known as Fat Monday or the day before Mardi Gras), there is a festival that takes place. There are multiple stages with all sorts of bands playing right along the waterfront.
3. Listen To Street Music
New Orleans is considered to be the birthplace of jazz music. Make sure when you enjoy this special piece of history and culture you can't get anywhere else.
4. Eat Good Food
New Orleans is ranked as one of the best cities for fellow food lovers in the country. Of course everyone has probably heard of Cafe Du Monde, but there are so many other little holes in the wall that deserve recognition due to the authenticity they bring to the table, literally. Fair warning: most of the items include shrimp or crawfish, so I hope you either like or learn to like all kinds of seafood.
5. Drink Up
Pictured is a Cajun bloody mary, which I heard is the best from Brennan's. New Orleans is well known as the torch-bearer of many drinks, both alcoholic and non. The Sazerac, brandy milk punch, Pimms Cup, Vieux Carre, the French 75, the Hurricane, and of course, the Hand Grenade. The creation and promotion of these drinks in New Orleans has been finely tuned and honed over time. So, drink up!
6. Experience Bourbon Street
There's no place like it. It's something you really have to see with your own eyes; that's all I'll say.
7. Catch Beads
At the end of the day, the only thing you'll be able to take home with you are the beads and the memories (hopefully). So don't miss the parades, and scream as loud as you can for some beads!
