We make a lot of trash. In America alone, individuals generate about 4 pounds of trash per day. And even though 75% of America's trash is recyclable, only about 30% gets recycled. This leads to overflowing landfills (which contribute to soil pollution) and an overwhelming amount of trash in the ocean (around 18 billion pounds a year). Sadly, we are destroying our environment. We are inadvertently killing animals and eradicating the nature that sustains us, but we can put a stop to it. Here are 3 things you can do to help save the environment.

1. Get a designated recycling bin for your home

Some people who live in neighborhoods already have this, but if you're like my family and have to take your own trash to the dump then you might not. Just get a second trash can for your kitchen and put everything that can be recycled into it. This way when you take the trash off, you can put all recyclable items into that bin. This is also a great way to get into the habit of recycling, so even when you're out you're in the habit of recycling certain items.

2. Use less plastic

Plastic is everywhere and it is very convenient, however, it can take up to 1,000 years to decompose. More than 80% of the negative effects on animals related to ocean trash is caused by plastic. We use a lot of it, but there are plenty of alternatives. Instead of buying shampoo, conditioner, and body wash in bottles get bars of it. Soap bars can be found almost anywhere, but for the shampoo and conditioner, Lush is the place to go. They have a multitude of options with a variety of scents and for different hair types. This Another switch you can make is to reusable water bottles and straws. Reusable water bottles are cheaper in the long run than continuously buying cases of plastic water bottles. Reusable straws are on the rise in popularity and companies are coming out with a portable version to eliminate the need for plastic straws at restaurants.

3. Try more reusable items

While you're shopping for a reusable water bottle and reusable straws, look for some other long-lasting items instead of just the one and done disposable ones. Dryer balls are a great alternative to disposable dryer sheets. They last a long time and can even make clothes softer than dryer sheets. Investing in reusable shopping bags is another good alternative to the plastic. They can keep your groceries colder, for one, and you can have peace of mind knowing you didn't contribute to waste by using plastic bags.

So now you have 3 ways to reduce your trash and help the environment!

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
