It's truly the most wonderful time of the year. A time filled with Christmas lights, bows and ribbons wrapped around gifts on the tree. But we can't forget that although we love giving and receiving gifts, this times of year is about so much more than that. So here is a few simple things to keep in mind during this holiday season.
1. Gifts are nice, but it's not about how much you spend on them.
You know the saying that it is the thought that counts... well it is the thought that counts. The fact that someone cares about you enough to think about you is a gift of itself. Some people don't have the funds for fancy gifts, but that doesn't mean the gift has any less value.
2. Be present.
I know, I know you just have to text all your friends and scroll down your Instagram feed to see all the cute puppies in Christmas sweaters. But for just a little bit, put that phone down and be present, even if it means dodging questions about careers and marriage from everyone in your family, be there. You can't get those moments back no matter how bad you'll want to in the years to come. Take advantage of the time, update your relationships, not your facebook status.
3. Be kind.
You might have the urge to scream at the retail worker for not having the exact model of a gift you are searching for or your server who took too long to bring you out a refill. Stop that urge. Be kind to them. They aren't with their families and are having to work crazy hours during this season just to pay the bills. Plus they may be more inclined to help you with whatever you need if you are simply a decent human being to them.
4. Spread the love.
Whether that means giving to those who need it or just simply smiling at the person walking past you, spread positivity and light. You never know some people situation and the impact you can have on their life with just one small act out of love.
5. Celebrate the holiday your way.
If you will be spending this holiday celebrating Christmas, Hanukah, Kwanza or anything else, remember the story behind the celebration. through all the gifts and decorations, find that story and celebrate it, for that is the true meaning of the holiday.
