It's that time of year again. The time of year where everyone is searching for the perfect Christmas gift for their loved ones. It's stressful, and agonizing, and downright painful at times. But this year I don't want my family to stress over the perfect gift for me. I'd rather have things of real value and not monetary value. This Christmas I would rather have memories and family time than something that comes with a bow and wrapping paper. Sometimes you have to sit down and evaluate the true value of things. So, this Christmas feel free to pick something off this list.

1. A Donation to a Charity in my Name Rather than giving me a gift.

Give the gift of charity in a loved one's name. That has more of a lasting impact than most gifts you could give and it helps more than one person.

2. Time With Loved Ones

Something that often gets forgotten around Christmas is taking a moment to just enjoy the people around you. To just enjoy your family and friends and not stress about every little holiday detail.

3. A Passed on Family Tradition

I will never forget my family traditions. They are things I cherish and hope to pass on for more generations to come. A Family tradition is a gift that will continue to grow over time.

4. A Good Laugh

Life is stressful and laughter is the best medicine for the soul. Laughter with someone you love is almost a necessity.

5. The Chance to Take too Many Pictures

Pictures are captured memories. I cannot think of a time where I was upset that I had a picture to remember something by.

6. A Shared Meal With Friends

Food is a human necessity but a mean is something you share. A meal means good conversation, a laugh, smiles, and something so much more than just food.

7. The Chance to Give Back

Service to your fellow man has more value than anything you can buy at a store and it is also a time to reflect on all that you have. Giving back is good for your health and the health of your community.

8. A Chance to take in Natures Beauty

A walk, a hike, something outside in a place you know well or even have never been, can cleanse the soul.

9. Thought-Provoking Conversations

I love a good conversation. One that leaves you wanting more or forgetting time. A good conversation inspires and teaches. And has more value than anything.

10. More Love Than My Heart Can Handle

Christmas is supposed to be a time family and friends and love. But we get distracted by gifts and having a perfect time. When our true focus should be just loving those around us.

Don't let the holidays stop you from understanding the value of things. GIfts are nice gestures but don't let them be the only thing you give this year. Give those around you something with lasting value.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
