I just recently had gotten back from a trip to Georgia with my mom and niece just for the fun of going to a new state and seeing what was so great in Georgia. I looked online at some things to do and what to see while I was there. The two major cities that stuck out to me was Savannah and Atlanta. Savannah has a ton of trees and pretty neighborhoods, while Atlanta is a pretty large city. I stayed in Savannah and waking up everyday to explore Georgia was amazing.
The first night there we got there around 7 p.m. and we decided to grab some ice cream to end a long day of driving. From where we were in Pennsylvania to Savannah, Georgia it took us roughly 11 hours. We went into downtown Savannah and stopped at Leopold's Ice Cream. It was set up like an old school ice cream shop with servers in folded hats and many photos of the Leopold family as they started the business many years ago.
When we arrived, the line was out the door, which if a line is that long it must be good right? Well, it was! I am a pretty big fan of dark chocolate so I got the chocolate raspberry swirl which had dark chocolate ice cream with raspberry puree and it was delicious. It was creamy and rich but not so rich that it was too sweet to eat the whole thing. It was soft yet not to soft to melt everywhere. There is a reason that line was so long, because getting ice cream there is a must!
The next day we went on a bike ride through the Savannah streets and their parks were to die for. Trees are one of my favorite things about nature, and Savannah had amazing trees. The Spanish moss that grows on the trees are what makes them look spectacular.
We stopped at one of the many park squares and came across a Saturday flea market. Since we are in Georgia we thought it was a pretty good idea to grab some peaches, and they were delicious!
After the park we decided to hit up beach at Tybee Island, a beach with some shops around and the best seashells you could find. I am not one to get into the ocean but it was super warm. It felt like bath water, like hot tub bath water, warm yet refreshing. You couldn't see the bottom, but it wasn't really bothering me, because I was really enjoying myself.
That night we decided to eat at the old Cotton Exchange in downtown Savannah and hands down they have the best sweet tea I have ever tasted. It was just the right about of sweet and now I have a sweet tea addiction because of it. If you like sweet tea or if you don't, either way it is something you need to say you tried because it is just that good. Their food wasn't bad either.
Throughout the trip we went to Wormsloe Historical District where The Notebook was filmed as well as part of Forrest Gump. The oak trees as you entered the historical district just took my breath away. They were truly beautiful with almost 400 trees lining the drive and such an old beauty.
After the historical district we went to Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens and it is something out of movie. I love flowers and nature and it was just everything all in one. There were so many views and trails to go on and it was something I will remember forever. It reminded me of the movie The Parent Trap and they are walking through vineyards and the large white pergolas.
There was a cute gift shop in there as well and the best sugar scrub in the restrooms. But the nice gentleman at the counter mentioned if we wanted somewhere to eat that is native to Georgia we should go to The Howlin Hound and it was set up like a fast food joint/restaurant where you went in and ordered your food, but then you sat down and they served you your food. I got a black and blue salad which had a bed of mixed greens with spicy grilled chicken and candied pecans with dried cranberries with blue cheese crumbles and topped with a vinaigrette. It was one of a kind and a tasteful salad at best! The spicy chicken paired well with the pecans and cranberries. It was also paired with soft tortilla triangles.
We decided to venture back to Tybee Island and instead of going to the beach we climbed the Tybee Lighthouse instead. 178 steps of pure beauty, terror of falling, and a new profound fear of heights. The view at the top was phenomenal but the way up was me clenching the railing till my knuckles turned white. It was truly a great experience and I would recommend it to anyone.
The last stop we made was at the Atlantic Aquarium and it had many exhibits, some were aerial views of stingrays and sharks, others were feel zones that you could touch starfish and anemias, as well as thee best dolphin show I have ever watched. So many cool sea creatures that were native to the Georgia waters and also made you think that they were with you while you were swimming in the ocean, just like these spider crabs.
Although I had fun being a Georgia peach for the weekend I was ready to leave eight lane city traffic and get back to the small town girl that I truly love being.
