4 Things Parents Need to Look Out for in Their Child

Being a parent is one of the most fulfilling experiences in life. It brings happiness, joy, and a sense of responsibility. But parenting can also be a challenge. Kids can acquire worrying habits out of nowhere, causing you to feel like you've failed in your role to bring them up. What can you do to prevent such situations from worsening?

Look out for these four things in your child before it becomes too late.

Low Esteem

Children develop a negative view of themselves when they don't get the support of those around them. It can be at school, in their homes or anywhere else. Low esteem can manifest itself differently. Most of the time, you will notice the kid lose the confidence to perform tasks, talk when around people, and so on. The solution? Offer them the support and guidance when necessary. Praise them (but moderately), and make them feel proud of themselves.

A Lapse in Discipline

Indiscipline can result from many things. Unfortunately, poor parenting is one of them. If left unattended to, the problem can get to a point where you're unable to change the habits of the affected child or children. What can you do? Deal with issues of indiscipline as soon as they happen. Set rules and make sure they're followed without slacking. Also, keep the behavior of your kids under watch not only when they're home but also when away at school or any other place.

Sudden Behavior Change

It can take many forms. Your child may become overly aggressive, moody, prone to anger outbursts or even excessively withdrawn. The environment at school or in your home can cause these tendencies. You could be overreacting and causing the child to prefer staying away from you. Or, it could be that they're constantly being bullied at school. To handle any unexplained change of behavior, try to find the root cause first. What's the environment like at home? You could also talk to their teacher. Once you've identified the problem, find the most appropriate way to deal with it.

Hanging Out With the Wrong Crowd

Children are prone to peer pressure, but mostly when they reach their teenage years. If yours is within that age bracket, they're likely to pick up bad habits from friends. Because you cannot always be at your kid's side, it's essential that you know the signs of negative peer influence. They include a drop in academic performance, deviation from the good behavior you've taught them, and continually depicting their friends as heroes.

There are many ways the influence of friends can affect your child. One of the most common- and a parent's worst fear- is them being introduced to substance abuse. Should there be evidence that your child is involved in this habit, immediate action is necessary. It is advisable to find out more about the treatment you can get them for drug addiction. That way, you can be certain that the step you take is the best for your loved one.

Parenting can be tough- sometimes even overwhelming. To raise your children the right way, knowing what behaviors to tame is essential and highly advised. It prevents parenting failures and prepares your kid or kids for their future life. With the right information and the willingness to see your kids grow into virtuous adults, your parental role can be both easy and joyful.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
