Recruitment director for a sorority council is an unparalleled experience. It is the exact mash-up between Betty Suarez and Wilhelmina Slater. Your goals of growing sisterhoods are always rivaled by a lack of enthusiasm from the people you are trying to help. Yet, the thought of creating change within a community that you love never stops you from doing what needs toget done. It is a thankless job that instills ambition, nerve and growth. At the end of the day, you can not help but love this crazy position. Here is some knowledge I have attained in my time as a council recruitment director:
1. My email is my best friend.
If I do not respond within 15 minutes, assume I'm dead.
2. People don’t do things on time despite the constant email reminders.
I've sent a reminder every week this month!
3. My Recruitment Counselors are not just my team, they are my second sisterhood.
They are the best reminder that no matter the letters, we’re all greek together.
4. Sometimes I just don’t want to do anything.
Because some days I need to lock myself in my room and sob into a bag of Doritos.
5. My tolerance for bullshit has plummeted.
Yes, this event is mandatory. No, I don’t care if you don’t want to do it.
6.The struggle to try to get people to love recruitment as much as I do.
The PNMs! The bonding! The stress headaches! The long hours! What's not to love?!
7. I became unapologetically ambitious.
Once you taste greatness, you can’t go back.
8. Some people think I’m utterly incompetent.
They have an opinion on everything I do, but never offer any constructive criticism.
9.My National Panhellenic Manual of Information and Recruitment Counselor Guide are my children.
I’ve read them more times cover to cover than I’ve read Harry Potter.
10. My organization skills have become top notch.
Training at 5? Chapter at 6? Meeting at 7? No problem. I color- coded it into my planner weeks ago!
11. I’ve become the most confident person I know.
Bottom line: you’ll never know what you’re capable of until you try. Having confidence in myself is going to allow me to pass on that self love and confidence to my sisters and potential new members. Come at me, Fall Recruitment!
