Your first year in college you learn a lot of life lessons. It can be difficult and lonely sometimes, just remember you are not alone, everyone is going through the same feelings. Yes, it is hard but your first year on your own is a beautiful growing moment in your life!

1. Call your family

It's extremely easy to get so busy and overwhelmed that you completely forget your life back home. Call your family, it's where you came from and is a huge part of who you are. Calling home regularly is also an easy way to make sure you don't lose touch with who you are and your roots.

2. Work hard but don't drown yourself

Sometimes you need to take a break. Either a mental break or a physical break or else all the days in the week will run together and you won't feel happy and excited about each day.

3. You’ll miss the good stuff

Whatever you were used to at home will change. Mom and Dad won't be there with dinner ready when you come home from class. The weekly routine you've done basically your whole life will change and it'll never be the same. That's not a negative thing though! Cherish and love that time in your life, but know that things are going to change drastically and it is exciting!

4. Don't stress about the things you can't control

Study and do as great as you can but after a test has been taken, don't stress about the grade. All you can do is do better on the next assignment, exam, or project. This goes along with anything in your life that is causing you stress. Everything will work out so don't put yourself through unhealthy stress that you don't need in your life.

5. Be a good friend

There are so many wonderful things about living on your own and figuring things out, but college is stressful. You will find your friends, and when you do, make an effort to be a genuine and caring friend. No one wants a negative energy hanging around them so be there for your people. Most people are in the same situation, everyone is figuring out how to be on their own and do this college thing, so be kind.

Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
