10 Things I Wish I Knew Before Starting High School

High school would've been so much easier.

There's no perfect rule book on the do's and don't's of high school, but there are some pieces of advice that will make it easier. Below are 10 things I wish I knew before starting high school. This list consists of advice that I had to learn the hard way, but now you won't have to.

1. Not everyone will like you and that's okay

Giphy

"You can be the ripest, juiciest peach in the world, and there's still going to be somebody who hates peaches," - Dita Von Teese

2. Dress as casual or as fancy as you want

Giphy

I constantly feared that my sweatpants looked lazy or my dress looked like I was trying too hard, but you really shouldn't care what others think. In fact, people don't judge outfits as much as you think they do so just wear whatever you want (as long as it's in dress code).

3. Don't dwell too much on that one bad test grade

Giphy

Not every grade has to be perfect so just breathe and try harder next time. High school isn't just for learning, it's for growing up so it's okay to make a mistake or two (or three).

4. Get to know your teachers

Giphy

Getting to know your teachers can make high school much more fun. Chances are, your teacher has funny stories to share and advice to give.

5. Strive to make all A's your freshman year

Giphy

Having a 4.0 G.P.A your freshman year is the perfect way to give yourself a cushion for the upcoming year when classes get harder. Also, it's just best to be in a productive mindset in the beginning because you're more likely to continue that way for the rest of high school.

6. Join clubs

Find clubs that interest you (even if it's just a little). Clubs are a fantastic way to make friends and get involved at your school. Plus, they look awesome on resumes and college applications.

7. Don't focus on romantic relationships

Giphy

High school is for finding your friend group. Of course, if a lover comes your way then that's great but don't focus on finding one. Enjoy time with your friends and let love come naturally.

8. The drama that matters in high school won't matter after

Giphy

Sometimes, drama is just unavoidable but remember that it won't matter after high school. Try to keep it as minimal as possible and focus on being happy, not on clever comebacks.

9. Go to the school events

Giphy

Even if you hate football, go to at least one or two games. High school only happens once. You'll probably be surprised by how much fun you have. And, if you don't, then at least you've experienced it.

10. Don't miss out on prom

Giphy

Prom is a classic, unforgettable part of the high school experience. Grab some buddies (or a date) and rock it on the dance floor.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
