10 Things About Colorado I Didn't Realize I Would Miss Until I Left
Alexa Holsten

When I packed my hopes, expectation, and bags and hopped a plane to Virginia for college, I was too blinded by a fresh start to realize the truly amazing things I would be leaving behind. This is my tribute to just a few of the things I didn't realize I would miss about Colorado.

1. Estes Park

Quaint, classic, and possibly haunted, Estes Park, CO is filled with local shops, restaurants, and tourist attractions, making it the perfect spontaneous get away.

2. The Mountains

An article on Colorado would be incomplete without giving the Rocky Mountains credit for blowing my mind every morning when I wake up.

3. The Tap Water

Colorado tap water tastes like fresh spring water. No need to buy bottled water or a filter. Refreshing goodness flows right from the sink.

4. Red Rocks Amphitheater

Nothing shouts "Colorado Community" like being surrounded by music lovers and the mountains. This is the perfect summer past time.

5. The Weed

Don't worry Mom, this is a joke. Contrary to popular belief, Colorado natives do not walk down the street with blunts. In fact, unless you seek it out, it's easy to forget that pot is even legal.

6. The Easy Driving

Never again will I take for granted that Colorado roads run on a grid system. Getting anywhere is much more of a hassle when you have to hop onto a new interstate every five minutes, or make U-turns when the unpredictable roads take you somewhere unexpected.

7. The Snow

If the weather is going to be cold, everything it might as well be beautiful and glazed in sparkling white snow.

8. Raising Canes Chicken

Texas Toast. Crinkle Cut Fries. Canes Sauce. States without Canes are missing out.

9. The Holiday Twin Drive in Theatre

Nothing beats an evening with your best friend, camping in the back of a pickup truck with junk food and blankets while watching the latest movie outdoors.

10. Horsetooth Reservoir

My sanctuary and my peaceful escape, the perfect place to refresh.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
