One night after work I waited an extra 30 minutes for someone to walk with me to my car. I was parked on the top of the parking garage and didn't feel safe walking by myself to my car.
It sounded silly to the men that I worked with that I was okay with waiting 30 minutes just for someone to walk me to my car. I completely agreed.
It was silly that I felt the need to have someone walk with me to my car. But that was just the start when I began thinking of the multiple things woman do just to make sure they are safe. I've come up with 5 things girls do just to be safe that boys wouldn't think twice about doing.
This isn't a "your life is better than mine" rant, in fact, it reminded me how girls are raised. Girls are taught to take extra precautions to ensure they are safe in every situation.
1. Going to a gas station after dark.
Tell me you have been there. I personally remember driving home after work. It was dark and I drove over 6 miles praying there was a gas station that was fully lit and had multiple cars filling up, too.
Anyone women out there who drive out of their way because they know the gas station is safe to fill up at? *I'm raising my hand over here* Minutes after getting out of the car, you quickly type in your zip code and begin filling up your gas tank. It feels like it is filling up slower than anytime before while you are making sure of your surroundings.
This is common for every woman out there and I bet boys never think twice about driving up to a dark, sketchy gas station when your tank is below empty.
2. Getting an oil change
I am guilty of waiting far too long before getting my oil changed because I hate it that much. Every place I have walked in, I feel out of place, insecure, and know there are words on my forehead that read "She's a girl who knows nothing about cars, overcharge her."
I know what to say "no" to when it comes to add-ons and I always call my dad to make sure. But it's a task that always makes it's way to the bottom of the list just because of my comfortability level.
3. Locking the doors right after getting in the car or house
No matter where I am, the first thing I do after getting in the car or my apartment is lock the doors. It's a habit now, but it's a safety measure that I was taught when I was young.
Whether I am getting gas or walking out of the grocery store, I have my keys ready to unlock my car and press the lock button before even sitting in the seat.
4. Running at night
I remember as a child having a girl in my community kidnapped while running at night. She was a young adult looking to get exercise rather than being taken advantage of by a sick human being. Girls are taught that we are attracting that type of behavior if we are outside running in the dark.
5. Walking in a parking garage
Call me paranoid but walking in a parking garage by yourself is similar to walking in a horror movie.
I worked for an employer where we had to park in a parking garage. The first thing my employer told me was they recommended women walked together to their cars just to be safe.
Want to know the terrifying aspect of that? They weren't kidding! There were multiple incidents that happened to my coworkers while they were walking to their car after work. All the men I worked with had zero incidents happen to them.
Again, this isn't a "you have it better than I do". But I think it is interesting to see how girls and boys approach everyday tasks in completely opposite ways.
