10 Things I Did In 2017 That 2016 Me Would Never Do

This year was a wild ride.

This year was a crazy one. I can't even begin to list all the crazy things that have happened in 2017 because it would go on forever. This year was particularly wild for me. I did things that I didn't think I would ever be able to do...well, at least some things that the 2016 version of me didn't think I would ever be able to do. Here are a few:

1. Ordered a coffee by mistake...and continued to drink it

I don’t drink coffee so this is by far the most exciting thing on this list…the even more shocking part about this is that I enjoyed it.

2. Voluntarily answered my phone

I’m the kind of person that will hit decline if the number isn’t already saved in my phone, but that changed this year. I answered the phone and had to talk to people (2017 was crazy if you ask me).

3. Did adult things by myself

Car repair? Check. Eye doctor? Check. Blood Test? Check. Hated every minute of it? Check.

4. Cut people out of my life

People always say they want to cut people out of their life, but never actually do. This time, I hit delete and block, and never looked back. And I really have never been happier.

5. Stopped putting so much effort into my makeup every single day

My Grandma Sally would never go out in public without putting her face on, and I was the same. This year, I somehow got the confidence to go to Meijer on the weekends without makeup and then that stretched to minimal to no makeup to class and work.

6. Wasn’t a “bro” and gave a bad peer review

Sometimes people need tough love...even if it is going to affect their grade.

7. Declined a job offer…twice

Have you ever gotten to an interview and everything about the position felt off? Well, it happened twice to me this year. And I am so glad that I did what I did. Better things came along for me, and I know that I made the right choice, even though it was hard at the time.

8. Told everyone about my alopecia areata

In case you missed the announcement, I'm going bald — and have been for years!

9. Wrote for Odyssey

I always thought this stuff was cheesy (and a lot of it is) but here I am, posting an article on Odyssey.

10. Quit something because my heart wasn't in it

Sometimes you have to sit back and really evaluate the reasons why you're still doing something. I did this, and I realized that there were things that needed to be cut out of my life. Which is what I did. Which is why I only have one more article left writing for Odyssey.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
