They Mean The World to Me

Who am I talking about? Let's just say the kindest, craziest, funniest, and prettiest gals on campus, of course, my sissys.

When I first learned about Greek Life, I told my mom that it was most definitely not for me. I am nowhere near tan and I do not have blonde hair or baby blue eyes, but that does not matter.

Joining a sorority is all about the sisterhood and philanthropy. Coming into Old Dominion, I wanted to become a part of something big. Relay for Life has always been something that I have cherished for many years, but I wanted to become more involved on campus...so I joined Tri Sigma.

When I first heard about Tri Sigma at one of the tables in the Webb Center, I thought to myself "Maybe I should give this a try" so I did. Tri Sigma is my home away from home. I could not see myself in any other sorority after joining Sigma.

I have seen my sisters at their worst and also at their best, but either way, they are still gorgeous. We have worked so hard to have Tri Sigma on campus and we succeeded. After becoming an initiated member in the fall, it was all about building our foundation from the ground up.

My sisters are my study buddies, workout partners, and dates for lunch. We also take shopping, zoo, and beach trips with one another. Coming from a really small town, my sisters have taught me so much about the city living, but that is not all that they have taught me. They have taught me all about starting fresh, getting out of my comfort zone and into my courage zone, friendships, and sisterhood.

Many other people think that sororities are an awful part of college because of stereotypical views, but I am so glad I went Greek! Volunteering, fundraising, and many more things we have accomplished as a sorority is why I went Greek. Many thoughts come from others that sororities only pay for their friends and party too much...which is not the case. If I were to "pay for my sisters to become my friends" I did not pay enough for them. Also, Greek Life has one of the highest GPA's on campus, because of required study hours and we all take our grades into a serious matter.

Going Greek has been the best decision that I have made here at Old Dominion University, by far. I would not have made it through my freshman year without all of the support I receive from my sisters. They all mean the absolute world to me.

Everyday is a good day when you are a Sigma sister.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
