"Offending people is a necessary and healthy act. Every time you say something that's offensive to another person, you just caused a discussion. You just forced them to have to think."- Louis C.K.
As always, the humorous Louis C.K. always has a witty lesson to make light of current situations. However, not everything is a joking matter, but it's hard to tell when the matter is appropriate, especially given recent events.
Largely, the current political climate regarding the 2016 Presidential Election, and the subsequent tensions from the results, have caused an atmosphere of widespread upset, poorly received lightheartedness and increased polarity in regards to political views.
Regardless of individual viewpoints and opinions regarding the outcome of the election, there's no denying that America has spoken, and Donald J. Trump will be our next president.
In addition to our new conservative president-elect, the Senate now contains 51 Republicans, 46 Democrats, 2 Independents, and 1 not yet called, giving the majority to the Republican party. Additionally, the House of Representatives has 238 Republican Seats, 193 Democrat Seats, and 4 not yet called. This gives yet another majority to the Republicans, resulting in a right-leaning United States government that many millennials view as inherently wrong.
The above map reveals what the election outcomes would've been if only millennials had voted, according to Mic. As drastically shown by this map, the younger populations favor the left. This, combined with popularly expressed concerns via social media, show that the word "Republican" has nothing but negative connotations. However, regardless if you align heavily with one affiliation, find yourself straddling the middle, or simply don't care, it's important to promote tolerance and realize that the right wing isn't always a bad thing.
When one thinks of a Republican, it's likely that the words "racist," "bigot," "homophobe," "fascist," and "evil" come to mind, as promoted by media portrayals and instances of right-wing extremism. However, leftist-extremism isn't portrayed as negatively in popular reporting, painting Republicans as the antithesis to a thriving, progressive America.
Of course, the principles of conservatism and the Republican party do, for the most part, disagree with or oppose popular 21st-century movements, but the black-and-white ideals of one party against another do not apply to current politicians and belief systems. This ultimately shows that both sides have the capability to be accepting, tolerant and lenient in their philosophies.
One of the largest complaints that liberal millennials have about Republicans is lack of acceptance and open minded-ness. However, with the country's overwhelming Republican majority in (soon-to-be) all branches of government, it's important to offer the acceptance you wish to receive, understand the system of checks and balances that our government has in place to limit corrupt power and accept the outcomes of democracy with humility and honor.
In a country whose motto is about freedom and acceptance, it's easy to feel our values will be compromised by our occasionally unscrupulous leaders. However, given respectable citizen involvement, continuance of peaceful protesting and the widespread effort of informing the public of the actions their government takes to look after them, the land of the free and the home of the brave will stand to see another shining day, regardless of the bipartisan majority.
