I'm the kind of person who gets caught up in holidays. October through January are my favorite months of the year because my mind lives in the holiday spirit. So when the time comes for me to buy everything that tastes, smells, and looks like a pumpkin, I'm going to. When there's a limited edition flavor of anything, I'm stocking up. If it says "pumpkin spice" or has a picture of pumpkin pie on it, regardless of what it is, I will be purchasing it. This season only comes around once a year, so I enjoy it while it's here. And whoever coined the term "basic white girl" based on the purchases and outfits of the fall/winter season, has obviously never tried pumpkin spice anything, because it's truly a wonderful invention.
There's nothing "basic" about me at all. I'm a full time student, daughter, and sister. I have responsibilities for 99% of my day. So if I want to spend my one percent of free time sipping on a pumpkin spice latte, I should be able to do so without being ridiculed by people who obviously need a little holiday spirit.
I'm the kind of person who couldn't care less about the opinions of others. But how unfortunate is it for the people who are actually affected by the negative comments surrounding their own personal choices. Don't let a stigma keep you from wearing your leggings with boots and a big t-shirt. Don't let a stigma keep you from buying holiday flavored coffees. Don't let a stigma bring down your holiday spirit. There are enough reasons to be self-conscious in this world, don't let a [poorly worded] stereotype keep you from living your life.
So, seriously, if you see someone buying a holiday or fall-themed item, LEAVE THEM ALONE. Actually, join them. You obviously could use some holiday spirit and a little fun in your life. And to all of you who sit on the holiday train all year long with me, don't let someone make you feel like what you're doing is stupid just because it's cliche. Live your life. Soak up the pumpkin spice sun. And hey, if you don't want to go out and be "basic" alone, give me a call and I'll put on my boots and plaid shirt and leggings and we can go get Starbucks together.
