Choosing a major is probably one of the most important decisions of our young lives. It can result in getting a good, well paid job immediately out of school or being, of sorts, a "starving artist" and not able to get a job immediately.
Nowadays everyone is so focused on money and how much they will get paid that they don't stop to think about how happy or satisfying the job is to them. If you're only picking a major because it makes a lot of money when you are done with school then maybe you should pick a new major. Go back to the deciding blocks and try again.
Like my father always tells me, "do something you love and worry about money next."
While I do agree, I also understand it's hard not to worry about money, considering I, and most Americans, do it all the time; we need to stop and take a look around at what we are doing.
Is money really that important to us that we are willing to sacrifice happiness to get it?
Is that sacrifice worth a life of unhappy labor? My guess is No. Considering I moved from Physics to English, I can safely say that I picked a major that I enjoy doing and one that I believe I can make a difference in, but it took a lot of convincing that the money didn't matter. There is more to life than making money and if I've learned one thing in my 24 years of existence, it's that money doesn't buy happiness. Not even remotely.
So why are we so focused on it?
Next time you think about your major or go to pick a career that may interest you please think about how happy or satisfying that major or career is to you.
