Therapy Isn't Scary

Therapy Isn't Scary

Therapy is a word that some people cringe at or have preconceived notions towards, while for some others when they hear that word, they may think that it was part of what helped save their life.

It is 2019.

Therapy should not have a stigma around it.

It isn't men in white coats shocking your brain. It isn't lying on the couch and being hypnotized. And more importantly it isn't something that only weak people do.

In fact, I think it takes a very strong person to go to therapy and to seek help for themselves.

It's not easy to admit that maybe you need to talk to someone about whatever your issues are.

A lot of people also think therapy is only for depressed or suicidal people and that is far from the truth.

You can go just to talk about what is stressing you out, or about how overwhelmed you are, or about your past.

Whatever it is, they are there to listen because life is too hard to go through anything alone.

They are not there to judge you or to tell you how to live your life.

They are there to be an open set of ears that can offer professional help.

Now I know that some people may feel awkward talking to a stranger about their deepest darkest secrets, but there is no rule that says you need to go in there and right away spill everything.

They want you to be comfortable, but at the same time the more you can offer up, the more they can help you with.

So for anyone who is struggling with anything, no matter how minor, I strongly recommend going to therapy.

At the very least just give it a try and go once, it can't do any harm.

People who think that going to therapy is bad or makes you a weaker person are wrong. It helps foster self improvement and self reflection.

I know that another reason people claim not to go is because it is hard to afford.

Well the good news about that is that if you are in college, a lot of colleges have therapy for free through their student health center.

I know people also may feel like they just are so busy there is no time to go to a therapist.

But the truth is, your mental health is important and you can always fit something important in.

So go and try it out if you are struggling, you never know what could happen!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
