If you happen to be a basketball fan, you most likely saw the Golden State Warriors and the Cleveland Cavaliers go at it during the finals for the third year in a row. It was an epic showdown between the two best teams in the NBA with the Warriors winning the first three games and then the Cavs forcing a game 5, but ultimately it the was the Warriors that came out on top when they won game 5 on their home court 129-120. Long story short, it's a good time to be from the Bay right now.
Shortly after the Warriors reclaimed the championship title, reports came out saying that the team will decline a visit to the White House if invited in a unanimous team decision. However, the team released an official statement saying that no decision has been made whether or not the team will decline an invitation if given one.
Even though no official decision has been made by the team yet, it really won't be that surprising if the Warriors decide not to visit with President Trump. Many members of the team, including Steve Kerr and Stephen Curry, have been very vocal about their distaste of President Trump and his policies. The Bay itself is also a very liberal area, especially Oakland and San Francisco where most of the fanbase is from.
If the Warriors do decide to not visit the White House, it would be the first time an entire team declined a White House invitation, but not the first time athletes have dodged President Trump. Several members of the New England Patriots decided to not visit the White House due to political reasons.
I really can't blame the Warriors organization for considering not visiting President Trump. I've seen a few comments here and there from people saying that the team should visit the White House because Trump is the leader if the country now and they should respect that, but I beg to differ in this situation. Why would you go visit someone who you don't respect in the first place? Considering the political leanings of the team and the fanbase, it would probably cause an uproar if the Warriors did decide to go meet with President Trump. While the argument might be that the Warriors visited President Obama in 2015 after they won their previous title, you have to consider again where the team is based out of and who believes what.
Whatever the team decides to do, I will support them with my whole heart, but don't be surprised if it's announced that they won't be drinking covfefe with President Trump.
