College. A place where you are supposed to learn about yourself as well as learn about the industry you would like to be a part of one day. There's only one problem with this. What if you don't know what you want to do? Or better yet what you want to study?
There's this pressure to get a degree in the field in which you desire to be apart of. But, what if you change your mind halfway through your junior year and it's too late to turn back? College is a time to question the usual and seek the unusual. A place to gain experience inside and outside of the classroom. It's a place to better educate yourself in hopes of being employed eventually.
When I first got to college, I came in as undeclared. I had an idea of what I wanted to do; I knew that I wanted to do something creative that offered me the freedom to explore my mind and thoughts. But, here was the issue: I found that almost everything interested me. So, as you can imagine this made it difficult for me to choose a major. One thing was for certain though, I would not be a business fellow or a biology major. Anything that I felt controlled my every move instantly turned me away.
One difficult thing about college is deciding what classes to take. I have always been told you can try this class or try that class and see if you like that field of study. But that's not reality. The reality is you have maybe two classes to actually get a feel for a different major and after that, you will be behind in credit hours. Or, worst case scenario, you switch from a Bachelor's of Arts to pre-med. When you're considering completely changing your college track and the thought of practically starting over hits, it's not a good feeling. In fact, it makes you want to stay just where you are.
Sadly, there's not this glamorous time set aside for students to play around with different majors. College, in my opinion, should be about taking classes that interest you and see what you excel at. Not taking the required three lab sciences for your department in order to graduate when you're a journalism major. Yes, you heard that right; three LAB SCIENCES and all I want to do is write and create. This just blows my mind.
So, still undecided, I chose what made me feel the most at home. Even though I chose a major that does not mean I automatically know what I want to do with my life. There is still much left undecided, but I have come to accept that this is just a normal phase of being a student.
Here's my advice to any struggling college student out there. If you are undecided, undeclared, or unwhatever, it's OK. We have all been there with you. It helps to research potential career paths and jobs related to your field of study. Dive head first into the research and network with people working in the fields that interest you. Talking to your school's Career Development Center might help clarify your jumbled thoughts and emotions. Or, when in doubt Google it out. It can feel like a hectic strangled mess and that time is breathing down your neck. The pressure to choose the right path looms over you, me and all the other students out there. Know that you aren't alone.
