The Ultimate 7 Song Soundtrack For The Aspiring New Yorker
Adrian Williams

There are people who have spent their whole lives living the hustle and bustle of New York City on the daily. Those native to a life other's can only dream about. Some of them completely loving the life they were given and other's dreaming far away from it. Well while I'm sure they have some love for their home, this playlist isn't for them. It's for those who dream to be them.

It's for those who have spent ample time dreaming of a life they could have chasing their dreams in the city that never sleeps. Because the city is where dreams of being a Broadway phenomenon or a New York writer come to life. Aspiring New York go-getters romanticize the city and aren't ashamed to admit it. Sure, our dreams of New York may very well be of the 1940s, but since we haven't quite figured out time travel, we'll settle for the New York of tomorrow.

Until then, you can catch us jamming out to the tunes that capture the magic of this city the best!

1. "Welcome to New York" by Taylor Swift

Not trying to state the obvious or anything, but can't you just see yourself getting off a plane while listening to T-Swift? C'mon dreamers, New York is waiting for you!

2. "Alexander Hamilton" by Lin-Manuel Miranda

So the song isn't directly related to the city, but "in New York, you can be a new man" and new beginnings is part of the magic. Also, Lin-Manuel is genius and Hamilton song should always be part of any playlist.

3. "Empire State of Mind" by Alicia Keys

I don't know about you but this song makes me feel like I can take on the world, not just the city.

4. "N.Y.C." by Charles Strouse and Martin Charnin

Nothing transports you to NYC like this Broadway classic. Take a listen and think about the city full of opportunities.

5. "New York State of Mind" by Billy Joel

Billy Joel gets it. The aspiring New Yorker is in a constant New York state of mind and you bet this is the song to wind down to at the end of a long workday.

6. "King of New York" by Alan Menken and Jack Feldman

I don't think I have to explain how this song makes us feel, but it's the perfect song for those dreaming of the rags to riches life.

7. "Theme from New York, New York" by Frank Sinatra

Frank Sinatra created timeless masterpieces in his era. One of my favorites will always be this New York anthem. Also, no New York playlist will ever be complete without it. If you're an aspiring New Yorker, be sure to listen to this one on repeat regularly. It might not make your dreams come true, but it'll inspire YOU to chase those dreams.

If these songs don't make you fall in love with New York all over again, what will?

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
