Are you about to start a week of never ending essays, tests, late night studying, crippling anxiety, and tears (also known as finals)? Are you looking for a way to stay afloat and sane while your classes slowly suck the life out of you? If so, here are some motivational tips to remind you that you are a human person, and not a victim of finals week. Warning: if you are looking for helpful study tips, this is not the place. Although, if you find some, please send them my way
1. Do the Wonder Woman pose every morning.
I got this idea from Shonda Rhimes, who mentioned doing this in her book. Basically, you stand in front of the mirror, put your hands on your hips, and stand with confidence. It is supposed to increase your self confidence, but in order for it to work, you really need to believe that you are great, and confident. Even if you don’t believe, that, tell it to yourself until you believe.
2. Dance party breaks.
I am a firm believer in dance party breaks. Whether you need a quick study break after hours of work, or you just woke up and need some motivation, dance party breaks are the perfect solution. Limit yourself to two to three of your favorite dance jams, and when the time comes, get up and dance like no one is watching. Even if you’re in a library full of people- go for it.
3. Use a motivational mantra.
Whether you adopt a phrase from a TV show, favorite book, poem, or create something up yourself, finding a phrase or mantra that you can repeat to yourself to either calm yourself in a manic state, or to find motivation when everything seems hopeless can make a big difference.
4. Dress in your favorite clothes.
Find your favorite sweatshirt, sweater, jeans, skirt, or whatever makes you feel comfortable and beautiful- and wear it. Finals are a time of stress, and in times of stress, all our fears and insecurities can come out. By dressing in a way you love, that makes you feel good, you can avoid any physical insecurities that might crop up as a result of stress.
5. Treat yo’ self.
Thank you, "Parks and Recreation," for this wonderful concept. If you spent all day studying, and can afford to take a night off and watch a movie- do it. If you just finished a final, and are feeling post final burn out -- reward yourself with a tasty treat. If you have been so busy with school work and haven’t had human interaction in a week -- get dinner, or spend some time with your friends. Whatever you choose, find a way to treat yourself, even though finals feels like a time for work, and only work.
6. Watch motivational speeches before tests.
In high school, before the AP tests, one of my teachers had us watch various motivational speeches, from all different movies, to get us pumped for the test. Find a clip of the best motivational speech you have ever heard in your entire life, and watch it before your tests in order to be filled with some last-minute inspiration, even if all seems hopeless.
Now, go forth and conquer those tests. Finals time is terrible for everyone, and very little can make it better, but I promise if you give some of these tips a chance, they might help prevent some finals freak outs and keep you functioning for the rest of the week.
