The Truth About Trump

Analyzing Donald Trump's Republican Nomination acceptance speech.

The Truth About Trump
CNN

I could begin this article by subjectively stating my personal feelings about Donald Trump and his campaign, but I will not. One of the biggest criticisms I have received throughout this election season is allowing my emotions to blind me from the truth. So I've thrown everything out the door. I have thrown every piece of heart out of my analysis of Trump's Republic Nomination acceptance speech. I have refused to include any sort of personal morals or ethics. I have eliminated any previous bias I had against Trump.

And you want to know what?

All of the ideas I had of Donald Trump being a racist, sexist, inexperienced, selfish, unaware, ignorant, opportunistic, overemotional, fear-mongering, pathological liar are 100 percent objectively accurate. Think I'm lying?

Let's go through his speech in painstakingly tedious detail:

The first segment of his speech is actually not that bad. It is rather persuasive, and whoever wrote the speech did a good job of trying to make Trump seem compassionate. He speaks of "safety, prosperity, and peace" before immediately stating the United States will once again be turned into a country of "law and order." This might not seem too concerning, especially so early in the speech, but law and order have both been heavily emphasized in the rhetoric of almost every dictator in existence.

One of the first things Adolf Hitler did during his descent into dictatorship was stress the idea of law and order. He wiped out all of his political opponents, rid the country of freedom of speech and press, and turned the country into a military state--all of these things are eerily reminiscent of Trump's platform. I do not mean to ignore the pain of Jewish individuals or make light of the purposefully hateful actions against Jewish people, and I am sorry if this comparison has been upsetting. I do not make the comparison lightly, but it is important for people to remember history. If we do not, we are doomed to repeat it.

Continuing to the next paragraph of the speech, Donald Trump states, "Our Convention occurs at a moment of crisis for our nation. The attacks on our police, and the terrorism in our cities, threaten our very way of life. Any politician who does not grasp this danger is not fit to lead our country." The insinuation that the current political administration, in addition to Trump's political adversary, has not addressed important issues or have made these issues worse is blatantly untrue. President Obama has released countless statements about his reliance on police officers, whilst simultaneously recognizing reform is necessary. Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has similarly spoken about bringing communities together to discuss and eradicate issues of violence against police and police against citizens. Both individuals meant to be insulted by Trump's words have done exactly what he claims they have not.

In the next couple paragraphs of the speech, Donald Trump takes mostly true statistics wildly out of context. The truth is, through President Obama's presidency, both petty and violent crimes have drastically decreased. He states that "Homicides last year increased by 17% in America’s fifty largest cities. That’s the largest increase in 25 years. In our nation’s capital, killings have risen by 50 percent. They are up nearly 60 percent in nearby Baltimore." While it is true that crime rates for 2015 increased, it is important to note that the current crime rate is still far lower than it was during the United States' last Republic presidency.

He also goes on to state that, "The number of new illegal immigrant families who have crossed the border so far this year already exceeds the entire total from 2015. They are being released by the tens of thousands into our communities with no regard for the impact on public safety or resources." The population of illegal immigrants found in the United States has been steadily decreasing for a decade, and as of January of 2016, we have the lowest amount of illegal immigrants residing in the United States since 2003.

Later in the speech, he mentions the, "existing massive refugee flows coming into our country under President Obama." Not only are these statements xenophobic in nature, but they are also out of context and incorrect. The truth is, most refugees are not even considering the United States an option. Germany, Hungary, Italy, Greece, and Turkey are disproportionately affected by the European Migrant Crisis. According to a study done in April of this year, the United States has not even admitted 10,000 Syrian refugees. Compare that to the 73,120 refugees accepted by Germany--one of the strongest world economies--in just a three month period of time. There is by no means a "massive refugee flow."

Donald Trump also states that, "we must immediately suspend immigration from any nation that has been compromised by terrorism until such time as proven vetting mechanisms have been put in place." Although nothing is blatantly false, I do have a few questions in regard to this statement. How is he going to determine which countries have been compromised by terrorism? How is going to prohibit further retaliation when our country shuts millions of people out? What is his plan for the vetting mechanism? Does the United States actually have the time and money to do all of this in addition to his great wall--especially considering the tax cuts he proposes?

Trump's speech writer is obviously gifted--evident by his use of typified stories of atypical situations in order to garner sympathy from the audience as well as a conversational tone allowing people of all educational levels to comprehend what he is saying--he was unable to completely hide many of Donald Trump's glaring flaws, including his stance on LGBT issues. Although Trump has claimed he is a "friend of the gays" throughout his campaign, and although he stated in his speech that he will "do everything in my power to protect our LGBT citizens from the violence and oppression of a hateful foreign ideology," his intolerance of queer individuals cannot be hidden.

Not only has he included one of the most anti-LGBT politicians as his Vice President, Indiana Governor Mike Pence, but he has also very clearly stated that he will only protect LGBT people from foreign ideologies. He will not do anything to protect America's gender and sexual minorities from the harmful ideologies of Mike Pence and his party.

Donald Trump also claims the individual who committed the largest mass murder by a civilian in the United States was a terrorist. The man was not a terrorist. Intelligence officials remain confident the attack had very little to do with ISIS, and that the man fit the typical profile for mass shooters--most of whom happen to be white men.

Until now, I have primarily focused on the statistical and factual faults of Donald Trump's social platform, which might not be of importance to all voters. Now I will go into the economically-based statements of his Acceptance Speech:

"I have made billions of dollars in business making deals--now I'm going to make our country rich again." While this may be true, Trump has once again taken his own success out of context. His father was an incredibly rich man who left his son a trust fund including more money than the average human being owns throughout a lifetime all put together. He was obviously able to capitalize on that head start by creating his own business--many of which have completely failed. In fact, here is a list of Donald Trump's failed business ventures: Trump Steaks, GoTrump.com, Trump Airlines, Trump Vodka, Trump Mortgage, Trump: The Game, Trump Magazine, Trump University, Trump Ice, The New Jersey Generals, Tour de Trump, Trump on the Ocean, The Trump Network, Trumped!, Trump New Media. Need I list more?

The truth is, one of the main appeals of Donald Trump is his business experience, but most of his business experience has been unsuccessful. He has had far more failures in the business world than he has had success, and the only reason he receives notoriety is because he pretends he is the biggest business mogul the United States has. As I have been told far too many times in this election, "actions speak louder than words." Clearly, this is not true as it applies to Trump; if he says he is good at business, he must be, no matter how many times he has repeatedly failed.

"I am not going to let companies move to other countries, firing their employees along the way, without consequences." Multiple business ventures promoted, endorsed and spearheaded by Donald Trump have placed the manufacturing, marketing and every other step of the creation and sales of his products in foreign countries. The Vice President of the business employed to create Donald Trump's clothing line even had this to say: "Finding a company that made in America was never something that was specified." And thus, his clothing line was not made in America. How is Trump willing to say he will ensure American companies stay in America when he did not even keep his own companies in America?

"Our horrible trade agreements with China, and many others, will be totally renegotiated." Analysis of Donald Trump's statements regarding China throughout his campaign has proven that Trump knows and understands very little about the history of trade in the United States in addition to America's relationship with China. But don't just trust me saying that; listen to a highly regarded economist discuss Trump's foreign economic policy. He literally states, "...almost everything Donald Trump has proposed on U.S.-China trade... is wrong. Very, very wrong."

"America is one of the highest taxed nations in the world." This is not even remotely true. There is no sugarcoating the explanation against this statement. It is false. Among developed nations, the United States has one of the lowest tax rates in the world, according to the Pew Research Center, the Tax Policy Center, and Politifact. Donald Trump seems to be the only person who does not agree. Regardless of the economic mayhem drastically reducing tax rates for all citizens of the United States could cause, this proves United States citizens already have it good.

"I will make America rich again." Donald Trump said this without any explanation as to how he plans on doing that. He lists change after change he wants to make to the United States, including building a huge wall, ending trade agreements, expanding the military and police, all of which will cost the United States billions of dollars. He offers no way for the United States to make up that money in addition to gaining more, except for his personal business skills. Furthermore, he offers no solution regarding income inequality for the genders or races. He plans to make America as a whole rich and leave the people living in squalor on the streets right where they are.

When does Donald Trump promise he will have all of this done? All of the social changes--the eradication of illegal immigration, the suspension of immigration in general, the end of violence against police officers, the re-implementation of law and order--and economic changes--severely decimated tax rates, making America rich, and ending countless trade deals with foreign entities? Within the first 100 days of his presidency. He repeatedly stressed that he will get things done and get things done fast. He emphasized speed, and throughout his campaign, he criticized President Obama for not being able to get anything done throughout his presidency. If President Obama, who has one of the highest approval ratings of any modern president, was unable to get Congress to back his proposals in a timely manner, then there is no way Donald Trump--who has no political experience and few political allies--will be able to complete his entire platform's goals in 100 days.

Now, I am in no way endorsing Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton with this article--as that would be including personal bias. And this is in no way the full extent of blatant lies and failures Donald Trump has had in his campaign. It would be terrible of me not to mention his blatant sexism towards women in the media--calling them "fat pigs" and saying relationships only succeed if the woman is not "bitching and whining"--blatant ableism--making fun of a professional reporter with a disability--his statement regarding his ability to murder someone in public and still be elected president, or the fact that both the UK and Germany have debated banning him from their countries.

I am not trying to tell you what to believe. I have just given you the facts. I have just given you the opportunity to see Donald Trump as who he really is. It is up to you to figure out what you will do with this information. And that is the truth.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
