The Triumphs Of The Olympics

It's been a great first week at Rio's Summer Olympics

The Triumphs Of The Olympics

The 2016 Summer Olympics are here and are in full swing. While the show of the pinnacle athletes in the world have been wonderful, there has been some issues with the coverage of the event. There have been extreme triumphs and some downfalls, but it has been another memorable Olympics. Here are some of my favorite moments so far.

The Chinese men's 10-meter synchronized divers were perfectly coordinated with each other and executed dives that put them in first place by 39.87 points.

Americans David Bouda and Steele Johnson won silver in the men’s 10-meter synchronized dive event.

British divers Tom Daley and Dan Goodfellow brought home bronz

The USA Women’s Gymnastics team won gold in the all around team event. Each of the women absolutely nailed their routines during their respective events. Although it was crushing to see Gabby Douglas unable to compete for the individual all around competition, seeing the Final Five (as the women dubbed themselves) receive their gold medals was spectacular.

Simone Biles winning gold in the women’s gymnastics all around individual event. She is the greatest gymnast who has ever lived. Every event she was precise and executed everything nearly perfectly.

Aly Raisman winning the silver in the women’s gymnastics all around individual event had me crying with her. She’s a sort of hometown hero, she lives 30 minutes away from me so I feel a connected Massachusetts pride. She also was shafted in 2012 in the same event when she and Russian Aliya Mustafina tied with 59.566 points. in the tie-breaker, Aliya Mustafina walked away with the bronze medal. Last night, Mustafina was in position to win the silver medal, but Aly just needed a 14 on her floor routine to surpass Musatfina to win. She scored beyond that, in true Aly style. Aly knew she had done the floor routine of her life as soon as her music ended. It was such a beautiful moment and I cried with her.

Simone Manuel winning gold in the 100-meter individual freestyle event. On the last 50-meters, she absolutely exploded with speed and won gold. Her face was priceless when she realized she won gold. She is also the first African-American woman to win an individual swimming medal.

Fu Yuanhui, a backstroke swimmer from China won bronze. However, she did not realize she had won a bronze medal! When she was being interviewed, Fu Yuanhui began, “Even though I did not win a medal…” and the interviewer cut her off to say, “But you got a medal. You are third.” Fu’s facial expression is priceless when she said, “What? Third? I did not know!” My heart smiled when she realized she got bronze! (Plus, she made the most adorable facial expressions when she found out!)

Michael Phelps won gold medals number 19, 20, 21, and 22 for his collection. He won his 27th Olympic medal, overall, in the men’s 100-meter individual butterfly. The man is a machine! He is incredible, dubbed the greatest Olympian to ever live. It’s been so amazing to watch him in his past four Olympics.

Maya Dirado winning the women’s 200-meter backstroke final. Watching her sing along to the national anthem was so moving since she says this is her last Olympics, though she is just 23.

A swimmer who is poised to become the next Olympic legend is Katie Ledecky. She has won four gold medals and one silver medal in these Rio Olympics. She has broken two world records and four Olympic records. The woman is unbelievable. She is only 19 years old and blew away the competition in the women’s 800-meter individual freestyle by winning gold by nearly 12 seconds.

I also need to mention Ryan Lochte's hair. Although it is not exactly sports based, or medal worthy, it is a notable occurrence. It started out as silver and now it's a green-blue. Whatever color hair he has (I think the chlorine has started changing it quite a bit from the white-silver-grey), I feel we're all blessed to see his face at the Olympics one last time.

While I could probably name another 20 moments from these Olympics that I have loved, these are just some of the ones that come to my mind first. It has been a great Olympic Games so far and I can’t wait for the week ahead.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
