The Top 10 Best True Crime Documentaries

Hello, my name is Erin Farmer, and I'm addicted to true crime. I think everything forensic is fantastic. Don't worry, I've talked to my therapist about it and he says I'm fine, and I know more of you like true crime than you will admit. So, read this article and no one will know, I promise. Then, binge to your hearts delight!

10. Soaked in Bleach - Netflix

This documentary was made by Tom Grant, who was the private detective that Courtney Love hired to find Kurt Cobain when he "went missing" aka killed himself. Tom Grant is absolutely convinced that Love has Cobain murdered, and this documentary details his findings and evidence to that fact. It is extremely biased and probably not that accurate, but it's still a fascinating watch, and let's just say it really had me believing that Courtney did it (please don't sue me Courtney).

9. The Witness - Netflix

This documentary details a case that we all learned about in AP Psychology: the murder of Kitty Genovese. Legend goes that when she was murdered outside her apartment building in 1964, over 30 people heard her and no one called the police or tried to help her. This film follows her brother, Bill Genovese, as he goes back to the scene of the crime, and tries to find the people who were there and heard his sisters plight. It's a very touching story and sheds a hopeful light on humanity.

8. Paradise Lost 1-3 - Amazon Prime

This one is definitely not for the faint of heart. It's about the infamous case of the West Memphis Three, where three eight-year-old boys were viciously murdered and thrown into a lake. It's such a convoluted and complicated case, but also extremely tragic and hard to watch.

7. The Jeffrey Dahmer Files - Netflix

This documentary interviews both the police who arrested and interviewed infamous serial killer, Jeffrey Dahmer, and his friends and neighbors who lived right next door when he was at the height of his murder spree. You never know who among your neighbors is dissolving people in acid and eating their brains.

6. Amanda Knox - Netflix

My favorite documentaries are the ones that show the actual victims and perpetrators, or in this case "alleged" perpetrators. It is fascinating to see this crazy tale come from the mouth of Foxy Knoxy herself, but it doesn't really reveal anything we didn't already know.

5. Crazy Love - Netflix

This documentary is a wild ride from start to finish. It is about a couple in the 1950's who were so toxic that one of them basically tried to have the other killed, and the story is told by the couple themselves. Get ready for a twist ending that is honestly...well, crazy.

4. Tabloid - Netflix

This documentary is about a case that no one has really heard of, but is the stuff of pulp fiction novels. A young blond bombshell basically kidnaps a mormon and keeps him captive for days, but is so in denial that she really doesn't think she did anything wrong. It is so cool to see her innocently tell this story like it was just another day in her life. Also, don't mess with the Mormons.

3. The Jinx - HBO

This is a docu-series all about real estate heir Robert Durst, who everybody basically knows killed his wife, but has never been convicted of it. In this series, you basically hear him get as close to a confession as we're ever going to get, and it is chilling.

2. The Imposter -Netflix

This was one of the first true crime documentaries I ever watched, and it has stayed with me over the years. Basically, a young boy goes missing in Texas, and years later a grown man shows up on the family's doorstep and says that he is their son. Trust me, you gotta see the one to believe it.

1. Dear Zachary - Netflix

Hoooooo boy, this one is a tough-y, but it's incredibly well made. I can't even describe too much of what happens without giving the HUGE twist away, but it is probably the best documentary I've ever seen. Basically, the filmmaker's best friend is murdered, leaving his infant son behind, so the filmmaker sets out to make a documentary about his friend's life to show to his son when he is old enough. It's heartbreaking to say the least.

This list is definitely not exhaustive; there are so many more documentaries that I did not mention, but these are definitely a good place to start! Happy watching!

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
