The Tongue Is A Fire

James 3:5-12

The Tongue Is A Fire

To have power is something very desirable. Everybody, in one way or another, likes how it feels like to have power. Everybody wants to change something, However, nobody realizes that every single person posses power by simply letting the words out of their mouths. Weapons are not the only things that have the power to destroy and kill…Words can destroy people’s worlds as well.

Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.

James 3:5-6

Words have power. “A word out of your mouth may seem of no account, but it can accomplish nearly anything—or destroy it!” We undermine the value of the things we say. I have gotten in trouble several times because I would say things without measuring the consequences. Words can destroy great moments, hearts, relationships, families, and churches, among other things. It can start as an apparent “inoffensive” spark that everybody thinks could be stopped whenever they want. But a small spark, no matter how insignificant it may seem, may never be controlled. It grows slowly, until you realize it took an entire forest.

All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and sea creatures are being tamed and have been tamed by mankind, but no human being can tame the tongue.

James 3:7-8a

It specifies here that the tongue can be tamed by “no human being,” meaning that God alone can take control of it. It gave me hope when I realized that God was the only one who could take care of that. Somehow, He helps me to think every time I am going to say something that could be misunderstood, or just do no good. I know that by myself I cannot control my tongue, but God can!

Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring? My brothers and sisters, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.

James 3: 11-12

The same thing that can cause a fire, can heal also. If we decide to use this power we all have in words to change things positively, we could heal hearts, make good friends, unite people, and encourage others all the time. It’s amazing how a little thing can have such a big power to turn the world up side down. We must let God control our tongue so that He can always speak through us.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
