The Thing That Makes Us Human

Sometimes fear is the only thing there is to feel and that is okay.

The Thing That Makes Us Human
leaving your fears

Who would have thought that in four days I would be moving into my college dorm and starting a brand new side of me? As the days come closer and closer I find people asking me if I am excited, nervous, shocked, and also if I am a little sad. Like I tell most people: I am excited to get out of my home town and see what the world has to offer me, I am nervous about being away from everything that I know and I am shocked that the summer went by so fast that in just a few days I will be taking my first classes as a freshman.

So yes, I am all of these, but I am also something that most people don't think about: I am afraid. I am not afraid of starting a new school or even being away from the town and people I grew up in; it is the factor of the unknown that makes me afraid. I'm afraid that because every detail hasn't been planed out for me in college, and I feel that I am going to mess it up one way or another.

I don't know what is going to be next for me and that scares me. Being afraid isn't really something that is talked about when going to college and some people might not even be afraid to go while others are. I'm here to tell you that it is okay to be afraid of not just moving into college or being at college, but in anything. Fear is just another emotion that make us human, as without fear we could never fully understand what it means to live. The important part about fear is that you don't let it control you, like I have in the past.

If you let fear control you then you are making life harder for yourself. Here is the thing that I have learned from my eighteen years of living: if you let fear control your life then you are never going to have an actual life. Instead, you are going to sit on the sidelines and watch the life that you should be participating in go right past you in the blink of an eye.

So yes fear is good; it is just another emotion that we show as humans, but the important thing to remember is to not let fear control you. Stand up to fear, look it in the eye and tell it that it does not control you, but you control it. Fear will pass just like everything else, or be replaced by a different emotion. Remember you are always in charge of what you feel.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
