No matter how old we get, and how independent we think we are, there is nothing like calling your Mom at the end of a rough day.
I’m not sure what magical quality Mom’s voices exactly possess, but it seems like she always has the ability to make us feel whole again. You can ramble and ramble, and it seems like she always knows exactly what to say.
Although being at college does force us to be independent and figure out things all on our own, there is something very comforting about hearing your Mom’s voice when things are out of your control.
Things could be going really well, or really really bad, and there’s no one I want to call first to update. Mom’s always seem to have a solution to our problems or, at least, offer some advice that helps us figure out a worthy solution.
If your Mom is anything like my Mom, you can always depend on updates from home and the occasional dog picture (or if you're like me, the weekly dog update). She makes sure your siblings don’t forget about you, and keeps your little brother from stealing your room while you’re away.
Moms also always seem to know it is the little things that mean the most. Getting a funny card in the mail or a “Good morning, I love you!” text is enough to make your entire day when you get caught up in the hustle and bustle of college life.
The relationship I had with my Mom growing up was always good. It is a relationship that I often take for granted, and I wish I wouldn’t. The relationships we have with our mothers, the person that carried us and sacrificed so much to give us life is extremely special.
When considering how many months and even years our Mom’s gave up to raise us, it’s no wonder that we have such special relationships with them. They know us differently than anybody else.
Since being away at college, my relationship with my Mom has changed. I think most people’s do. It is different, because you no longer rely on your Mom to help you with laundry or make your dinner. You now rely on them for companionship, advice, and a shoulder to cry on.
No matter how tough things get, it is so special to know that Mom is only a phone call away and has the perfect words to say. When things get rough, or things are great, or things are just normal, calling your Mom always feels good.
And chances are, she’s so appreciative that you called as well.
