I'm a political junkie. I've always been. I watch cable news religiously, I read political biographies for fun, I would rather go to a Presidential library than an amusement park. So on Thursday, my eyes and everyone else's were glued to the television as former Director of the FBI James Comey gave testimony on his memos he wrote while having conversations with the president. I have a friend who lives in Northern Ireland who was even watching it. The statement that James Comey and the Senate gave to the press the day before the hearing read like a John Grisham novel. Something taken off the big screen. There are a few new things that I learned after watching Mr. Comey give his testimony. I will go through them in this article.
Let's start with the fact that James Comey thinks Donald Trump and his team are liars. After Comey met with President-Elect Trump on January 6th, where he discussed the salacious dossier with Mr. Trump, Comey said he "felt compelled to write down everything that had transpired." The reason why Comey wanted to write down every single word that was spoken during that meeting is because he "was honestly concerned [Trump] would lie about the nature of our meeting." Trump and his team have been known to do this. Comey also stated that the team lied about why he was fired from the FBI. The Trump team at first had stated that Comey was fired because he had lost the confidence of the President, and that the organization was in disarray, which has not only been disputed by Comey, but also the acting FBI director and other FBI agents. James Comey did not trust this President.
Donald Trump is at the very least guilty of obstruction of justice. One day after Mike Flynn had to resign as National Security Advisor, there was a meeting with the criminal intelligence team in the Oval Office. In this meeting was the President, Vice President, the President's Chief of Staff, Attorney General, FBI Director, and several other heads of various intelligence agencies. At the end of this meeting, the President asked everyone to leave the room except for James Comey. AG Jeff Sessions lingered behind but was soon told to leave by the President. As soon as the door was shut, Trump told Comey, "I hope you can let this Flynn thing go. He's a good guy." Put yourself in James Comey's position. The President of the United States, the leader of the free world, your boss is telling you he hopes you can let this thing go. What would you do? How would you interpret this request? Donald Trump was, in my opinion and many others, trying to get James Comey to stop the investigation into Mike Flynn. If it was determined in 1973 that Richard Nixon obstructed jusitce with just one word, this Trump quote has got to be obstruction.
The last thing is, James Comey is a man of integrity. When he released that letter to Congress just days before the election about Hillary Clinton's emails and essentially causing her to lose said election, I was one of those calling for his resignation. After I had cooled down, and after watching Comey testify numerous time on the matter before Congress and the Senate, I see the predicament he was in at the time. If I were to put myself in his shoes there are some things I would have done differently, but maybe that’s why I am not the FBI Director. He seems like an honest and trustworthy man. If I have to choose between Comey or Trump, I'm going with Comey.
This investigation is going to go on for a while. Some are even saying it might be a year from now before this thing is over. In the meantime, watch what the Trump team does from now until then. Also keep an eye on the Republicans in the Congress and Senate. On the day they knew everyone would be watching the Comey hearing, Republicans in the congress passed a bill to get rid of Dodd-Frank. This bill was created after the housing crisis to protect citizens from big banks causing what happened in 2007 and 2008. Watch your back, it's a crazy world out there. Remember to resist.
