The Stages Of Eating Healthy

How are you supposed to live with spinach instead of spaghetti?

The Stages Of Eating Healthy

Being an unhealthy person is so much fun. Cookies. Popcorn. Chocolate. Quesadillas. The list goes on and on. The problem is that having health issues because you eat Taco Bell for breakfast isn't so cool. Second semester is the time to be healthy. Whether it be for the spring break bod or preparing for the summer, there is lots of motivation, but that doesn't necessarily make anything easier. In fact, there is pretty much a formula for the thoughts that will go through your mind during this dark time in your life.

Stage One: Optimism

This is the time you have so much hope for your future, healthy self. You sign up for the gym and buy spinach. Your Pinterest board is loaded with "skinny girl" recipes that you just know will be the reason you have a six pack. It seems like you will be able to see changes pretty quickly. Your body will be toned in like four days and it will all be worth it.

Stage Two: Exhaustion

All of the sudden you are working out and not eating mounds of food. You are sore. What the heck is sore? The last time you were this active was when you did high school sports and that feels like it was 17 million years ago. If Khloe Kardashian can get in shape, so can you.

Stage Three: Cheat Day

At about the two week point you've got to eat all that old junk to remind yourself what happiness feels like. You chow down on pizza, nachos and mozzarella sticks. Even though it's only been a couple weeks, you already feel sick from this kind of heavy food, but it was so worth it. Food is amazing.

Stage Four: Pain

The cheat day was a horrible idea. Now you start convincing yourself that it's okay to eat some of your old favorites. Oprah eats bread everyday, so you can have Ramen for dinner, right? All you want to do is sit around eating chocolate, and the commercials for Valentine's candy are not helping anything. There have been a few embarrassing moments were you have actually cried a little thinking about hot dogs.

Stage Five: Anger

Being healthy doesn't seem to be paying off. Is this even worth it? This is stupid. Being in shape is overrated.

Stage Six: Acceptance

Finally you are used to eating fruit instead of Sour Patch Watermelon and you actually sort of like it. Your head stopped hurting all the time and you regain some of that initial optimism. You rule. You can do this.

Stage Seven: Failure

As per usual, the healthy life did not last. You are better than you used to be, but let's be honest, you are in college. Food is life and life is food. Eating crap is fun and this is the time do to it. You can be healthy when you are old and boring.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
