I Am The Ghost That Walks This Campus

There was a school of philosophy that existed during the 4th century, B.C.E, under the instruction of the Aristotle, the student of Plato, in Ancient Greece. Considering that I am introducing this train of thought by discussing philosophy, the immediate reaction of many readers will most definitely be something to the notion of "that goes way over my head." Well, before you instantaneously surrender and accept automatic intellectual defeat due to the presence of philosophical undertones, allow me to elaborate on the school of philosophy I am referring to, Peripatetic Philosophy.

There is a wonderful publication regarding the philosophical school entitled, "The Philosophy of Walking," by Fredric Gros. Although it is a very rich and empirical read, Peripatetic philosophy's bedrock is uniquely simple. It is the concept of Philosophy being best conducted while walking, preferably alone but potentially with "co-philosophers," and predominantly outside. The philosophy recommends that for a thinker to attain his or her full potential whilst following a train of thought, he or she is to maintain a steady pace of walking which unites one with the concept of outside as an abstract ontological condition as opposed to a mentally perceived location, expands our lungs and heightens aerobics, and allows us to attempt to become, as Ralph Waldo Emerson put it, a "transparent eyeball." Although it is unlikely that we will attain this platform of consciousness, it still allows even the worst of us to make important discoveries and draw conclusions on the nature of life. In doing so, one mustn't put forth an effort while walking, physically. Walking slowly is the key to slowing and expanding time itself, yet, the point is not to deliberately maintain a high or low velocity. Walking is the autopilot while your mind wanders to foreign cerebral places and treads treacherous tumultuous trains of thought that abruptly came to an end in recent years.

By engaging the bedrock with metaphorically powered analogies we can ascertain that the source of speculation for all human thought is derived from the collective mind. So, what am I talking about here? I vowed in this very essay not to delve into the abstract philosophies of history, yet here I am trying to communicate metaphorically powered analogies, whatever those are. What's the purpose of the themes of peripatetic philosophy? Because there is a peripatetic philosopher inside each and every one of you, including and especially my fellow college students, dying to break the chains, dismantle the cage, set itself free.

And take a long walk. And transform into a ghost that walks this campus. That's definitely what happened to me. This is my confession to being the frigid apparition that roams this campus and haunts students around me who have not a single understanding as to where my mind is at. This is a lesson as to how you can join me.

It's hard for me to believe that most individuals do not instinctively recognize that while we walk, even as a mechanism from point A to point B, our mind treads so far that not a single second lingers in our memory after the diminutive journey from one location to the next. If you engage that mental activity, though, if you chiefly decide that on the walk you are about to embark, you will engage in peripatetic philosophy, you can begin to remember. Your ability to recall the trains of thought you followed during your deliberate daydreams while your legs mechanically ship your mind across campus paths will become absolutely indefatigable. As you remove yourself from the crowd on campus. As you attempt to philosophize during your walk, the chatter and bustle is oh so subtly influenced by the students’ sensation of a slight chill or foreign presence as they brush by you, an apparition that roams the university, the nature trail, etc. Whether you ascend to a higher platform or descend to the bottom rung of the latter, while the rest of the students converge around you, you are a ghost that walks this campus.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
