As if this year hasn't already been a big enough change with plenty of surprises we have been getting a lot of snow, even in places such as Florida and Texas. Granted, it's pretty much all over the news, but for college students who recently kicked off with the new semester, inclement weather can be a burden on top of an already big change! However, there is just something about snow days in college overall that makes them a lot more special and unique compared to the ones we had in grade school.
First of all, college delays are definitely more relaxed than grade school delays. While delays are existent in college, they usually just result in cancellation of early classes as opposed to an alternate schedule in high school that often leads to shortened classes and heightened stress. Although my high school had an alternate schedule set up for delays (which literally happened less than five times during my duration there), classes were shortened and times were switched around. However, just having early classes cancelled due to a delay? Now that's what I'm talking about (along with most students who live for cancelled classes for some extra sleep)!
Secondly, college snow days are much easier to cope with. Remember when you were in grade school and you always hoped for a snow day or early dismissal, yet you were never really certain? Or you had to deal with your bus being stuck in horrendous traffic (don't even get me started at the end of March during my sophomore year of high school)? Well for students who live on campus, a snow day is much easier to deal with and work around with because our schedules are erratic enough already! And with the ever growing use of technology today, all it takes is a simple e-mail or group text in order to get the point across!
Even if you are a commuter student on campus when it is snowy, that doesn't mean that there isn't fun! For commuter students, if there is an early or sudden cancellation or delay and you drove all that way to come to that one class, don't feel as if you wasted time. This isn't high school, there are unlimited options, and you can go wherever you want whenever you want, whether it would be the library, student center, Starbucks, a friend's dorm, or a local restaurant or store! You can even be a kid again and play in the snow until it eases down!
College snow days are the best kind...and easily the best surprise in life! Cancelled classes, more sleep, beautiful scenery...but most of all, even more freedom!
