The Side Effects Of Watching The Game Show Network
The New York Times

I will admit that I am guilty of aimlessly watching television for hours on end. After a long week of meetings and homework and even more homework I want to sit down and do something that for the most part is mindless and will take my mind off of the fact that I spent so many hours in the library. The Game Show Network is an excellent channel to flip to that will never disappoint you because there is always something new (or old and you have never watched it before) going on.

Flipping to the Game Show Network is a dangerous path to go down though because you never know when you will stop watching. No one is going to walk into the living room and complain about the Game Show Network playing on the TV, they’re just not. So, be prepared for many episodes of all sorts of family friendly game shows and the side effects that go along with watching these programs for so long.

You decide your family are the perfect contestants.

My family would dominate "Family Feud" hands down. Plus, my family is full of unique characters and would make for great TV. We are all obnoxious, but we are also incredibly smart and full of useless information. It’s really a shame that this hasn’t happened yet.

You start humming all of the opening music.

After hours of watching this channel, the opening musical number will get stuck in your head and you will incorporate them into your everyday life. These songs are practically essential to living now because they provide the perfect amount of suspense to the most mundane situations to make them interesting. Tired of waiting for someone to answer you, Jeopardy is your go-to musical track.

You have an overwhelming need to be competitive.

Just face it, after watching all of these competitive game shows you feel on edge and ready to take on any challenge. On top of humming the songs, you feel like you need to challenge anyone and everyone to the dumbest competitions. You make eye contact with someone and suddenly you have to get to the door before they do. You are pumped up and ready to go at all times even though there is no cash prize for doing the dishes the fastest. Life isn't a competition, but a small part of you is inclined to believe so.

You realize that the world is full of crazy, superstitious people.

People have the weirdest superstitions, especially when it comes to winning a prize or cash money. Specific numbers and trinkets and medallions matched with a crazed look in one's eye makes for strange personality tics and makes for even better TV.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
