If the massive shootings and bombings at Pulse Nightclub, Manchester Arena, or the Christina Grimmie concert were no indication that we have a problem on our hands, now it is in lights on the Las Vegas Strip. As I'm sure everyone has heard, another shooting took place at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. Over 22,000 country music fans gathered for a concert. At the end of the night, not all of the innocent listeners got to return to their families, homes and everyday lives.
One of the most unfortunate commonalities with all the shootings listed above is that everyone just wanted to have a good time. They bought tickets or paid the cover to enjoy themselves for the night. Because of the weapons, as well as the insane people with easy access to them, innocent bystanders can no longer have fun without an unnatural fear something bad is going to happen.
With all the massacres at clubs and concerts killing and injuring so many, it's leaving entertainers rightfully petrified. So many are in the business of making sure people are having the night of their lives. After a bomb went off at her concert at Manchester Arena earlier this year, Ariana Grande was appalled by the death of 22 of her fans. Christina Grimmie was a victim of a shooting at her own show in Florida back in 2016. Now, Jason Aldean is yet another host to a murder spree and is heartbroken.
Other artists are finding it hard to stay quiet during their time of grief, shock and fear. No one knows if they or their fans will be next to not make it home from a show. It needs to be addressed and resolved.
One man, with more guns in his possession than he could have even carried in his hands, killed more than 50 people and injured more than 500. As if we're keeping score, it is the biggest shooting in US history. It's the kind of news story that hurts the head and heart, leaves chills down the spine and brings tears to the eyes of any sane human being.
The amount of ease there is to possessing guns is disturbing. There needs to be some kind of regulation and control. How many mass shootings is it going to take? The predators have hit pretty much every demographic and there are still people defending what brings on the madness. Stephen Paddock, the Vegas shooter, owned at least 10 firearms. People aren't paying attention to red flags like that when dealing out weaponry. No one should ever have 10 guns of any kind.
After this is all said and done, we'll still have people yelling out for their guns to not be taken away. Too many people aren't scared yet, and we shouldn't wait for them to be. We cannot keep going on thinking it isn't bad until it personally happens to us. Shooting is becoming less and less of a mechanism for self-defense and more of a cause for mass murders.
Increasing the use of guns isn't going to end the madness brought on. Gandhi's quote, "an eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind" is a lesson in how horrible it is to double up the violence as a form of retaliation.
However, if that isn't enough, I'll share some logic I heard from Trevor Douglas, a now anxious up and coming artist: "if your house is on fire, you don't start more fires to put out the first one." Using more guns to put an end to shootings is the same thing.
Everyone has an opinion on how to deal with guns and violence, and it takes a lot of self-reflection to pick a side. You can worry and hope it stops, but it is time to be proactive. When all the grieving and praying is over and the victims are laid to rest, we'll still have a problem with terrorists and the insane until we fix it.
