Ever since we could remember, we as a species have always been searching for a means by which we could live longer and possibly never die. We have seen it done in movies, religion in some cases, and other cultures. Everything we have ever known and will know will soon die and move on. Something that has stumped scientists is how exactly this would be possible. How can we make our bodies withstand the decay it slowly succumbs to with age? Eugenics has tried to achieve this feat, but our bodies can only withstand so much time before they fail us. One idea that has changed the dynamic for this idea is instead of thinking about preserving our bodies, what about preserving just our subconscious? What if we could somehow upload all our memories, thoughts, experiences and personalities onto a computer that would then be able to talk and act like us? This idea seems like a scientific breakthrough, as it has been tossed around within the scientific community, but what could go wrong? This can become quite scary and frightening. There is the possibility that our subconscious may not exactly upload, but simply disappear into the ether. The artificial intelligence, depending on the advancement, may be able to simply copy one's subconscious and mock that subconscious. So whoever we thought we would be speaking to would not be the person we think it is, just a computer that contains the same code as that person. It would pretty much mimic a clone. The film "Transcendence" depicts this very well.
So would you risk pressing that button to transfer your subconscious with a slight chance that your thoughts and memories would completely disappear, causing you to theoretically die? The chance that you might live forever inside a robot can be enticing for some people, which may make them overlook the possibility of it failing. Pressing that button could simply terminate us, but the possibility that it could work will always distract us into thinking it could be a reality.
