The Reality of College

Before you go to college, you grow up watching movies and tv shows, or hear stories about, college. People tell you what your college experience will or what it should be like. You then go in to college scared for your life with high expectations and thinking you truly will never have any money and you are going to fail all of your classes and starve to death while gaining 15+ pounds, but it is okay because it will be the best years of your life just like high school. Here is what you are told vs what it really is.

1. Greek life rules over all. Personally, I chose to go through recruitment and I have fallen in love with my sorority, but greek life does not control the university. Yes, many people involved in Greek life are involved in other activities, but they do not get those positions because they went Greek. I have so many friends who are not Greek and they are just as involved at school as I am.

2. Your professors won't care. Sometimes this is the case but most of the time it isn't. It is their job to teach you so obviously if they fail then they are going to get in trouble. You will come in contact with some professors who care so much you change your major because they impacted your life just that much... in a good or bad way.

3. You are going to gain weight. Well sure you might, but personally I lost way more weight than I gained. You are going to be walking everywhere, so don't stress too much about it, but obviously take care of your body.

4. You will never have any money. Honestly, if your parents do not provide you with money, don't be dumb - get a job. College is a time for you to learn how to be an adult, so learn to save money and you really will not run out. You most likely won't be driving much so you won't have to pay for gas, and also there's this thing called a meal plan, so you don't have to spend a ton of money on food!!

5. It is impossible to get an A. Once midterms and finals comem you honestly really will believe this with every part of your being, but you can get an A. Trust me, college IS hard but it is not impossible to be successful.

6. It is hard to make friends. Do I even need to talk about this one? You are literally around people all day everyday. If it is hard for you to make friends, just remember to compliment people and maybe even accidentally fall right in front of them or walk into them, and boom, friends for life.

7. It is all about parties. It is a no from me. Yes, there are people who like to turn up, but there are more people who like to watch Netflix. Those people are also the people who really mean they want to just chill when they say Netflix and chill. Trust me, because that is me.

8. You will never call your parents. As if. Just ask my dad - I call him all the time. Literally all of the time.

9. You are going to change your major a lot. Actually, most people successfully make it through college without changing their major. As long as you know you are going to do what you love, changing your major is not the end of the world.

10. College will be the best years of your life. As Hannah Montana says, "life's what you make it, so let's make it rock." College will be a huge part of your life, because you will learn and grow so much on your own, but life really is what you make it so keep making life rock and just keep making life great.

Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
