Upon first look, "The Ranch" on Netflix may seem just like a show about a family of rednecks who own a ranch in the middle of nowhere.
Sure, it is basically just that, but it's also more than that. This show has sent me through a spiral of emotions and is filled with relatable content, even though I don't live on a ranch in the middle of Garrison.
One of my favorite things about this show is that it shows the real ugly side to relationships (and also the beautiful sides) such as divorce, cheating, breakups, makeups and everything else in between that you see happen in relationships.
This isn't always happy, but it's real, which is why I like it so much. I think of it as similar to the show "Last Man Standing," but a more raw portrayal of real people dealing with real problems instead of an upper-middle-class portrayal of "conservative rednecks" which isn't all that relatable to most people.
Speaking of real problems, the show also shows what happens to people who don't always have a plethora of money lying around to use. The family in the show deals with working-class issues that involve money that are relatable to a viewer who may be going through the same type of thing -- it also reassures the idea that it's possible to get through these problems with the help of hard work, family and friends. The characters deal with money in a way that normal people do, and I like that aspect of the show.
Family is another topic in the show. The two sons have a father who is consistently hard to please and may seem like the typical hard-ass father on the surface, but deep down has many issues of his own that he is working through -- like trying to keep his ranch afloat without having to sell it. While the sons argue with their father over many things, they always find a way to mend their relationship in the end, just like a real family.
You can't take my word for how great this show actually is, and to be honest, after I watched the first episode I thought it was just another goofy comedy. I was wrong though; the show has all kinds of ups and downs that made me fall in love with it, which is why I believe no matter who you are, you probably will too.
