I've been wrestling with my mind all week long over this new Taylor Swift song. She has the tendency to do this thing where I absolutely loathe everything she stands for and then turns around and releases a bop such as her newest single "Look What You Made Me Do." That being said, I'm still not entirely sure that I'm a fan of what she's putting down.
Cue the gasps from millions of people from all over the world.
Here's the thing; while she makes fun of herself at the end of the video for being the victim, the song itself is still one giant victim noise. The ominous "you" is making her change, making her become some new reinvention of herself. Why does someone else have to make you do that? Why can't you just change for yourself and not for others? Isn't that what we're trying to drill into the minds of the younger generation?
Another problem I have with this new era is that she's still writing music that tears down everyone that's done any wrong to her ever. To me, that still feels like middle school songwriting. I think Twitter user Clarkisha Kent (AKA @IWriteAllDay_) said it best with "Your WCW thinks she's Regina George, is stuck in '09, reps girl empowerment but slutshames & wears her victim complex like a badge. She is 27." There comes a point where all of this petty stuff should be left in the past, and you should realize that it's no use fighting over it anymore. What she's doing is stirring everything back up so it spirals into a never ending fight where everyone is getting backed into a corner and no one gets anywhere. We're just stirring stuff up that the media has already talked to death and moved on from.
Aside from all of this, I thought that the video was a well thought out representation of her shedding her past. However, I'm not totally convinced that this whole bad girl thing can be pulled off without anyone poking fun at her. If you ask me, she needs to revert back to her country days, specifically the "Red" era.
But, alas, the past is passed. That's a mantra that Swift maybe needs to repeat to herself a few times.
