The Problem With "Cold Days"

Now, if you're from somewhere that is normally warm, then this may not apply to you, but for me, this has been a continual conversation. I'm from the suburbs of Chicago and this has been one of the coldest winters we've had in a while. Despite the grueling cold, schools still remain open. The idea of a snow day isn't really a possibility anymore because it doesn't snow too much to the point where we have to close school. A common discussion is whether schools should close for cold days. I want to share my opinion on cold days and to discuss the annoyed mentality that I've heard from many people, in regards to this subject matter.

Side Note: I'm now at Judson University and I've learned that college works a whole lot differently from public school, so I don't expect any cold days any time soon. But something I wanted to discuss was my time in grade school and my history with cold days.

I grew up being apart of the same school district for 12 years, U-46 to be exact, and I've seen them make their changes and their response to these kinds of situations. Now, let me respond to some comments the kids have had regarding the closing of school. A lot of these kids have the correct mindset. To close school because it's to cold is good. To close school because you didn't study enough for your final is not only wrong but probably a bunch of crap. Guys I totally get it, you'd rather not go to school, but when you are running your mouth all over Facebook asking if you have school or not, it makes you look like such a child.

A common argument from those who don't believe that we should have have cold days is that because those people themselves went through similar trials. This usually comes from people of the older demographic but I'm not generalizing because there have been people of the older demographic believing in cold days. Because they have to continue to go to work, or they were forced to go to school in the past they feel that these kids should start preparing for the future, where you won't get any cold days. Keep in mind that we aren't only talking about high school kids who have to wait outside for their bus stop, which is also dangerous under extreme weather, but also younger kids that have to walk to school or wait for their bus. Some may wonder what extreme weather may actually entail, but if there is a windchill that is negative, it's too cold. It's as easy as that.

Side Note: Older Generation, I'm not going to apologize for my generation's lack of understanding when it comes to this subject. But please don't give us the justification of our lack of understanding from the fact that we are young, it's not true.

So, anyone that thinks the kids should just "BUNDLE UP", please think about what you are saying and everyone that effects. It's honestly just rude.

Also, any kid that says they need more time to "STUDY", don't kid yourself. You are making the rest of us look bad. It's very ignorant.

Listen, this isn't an argument on whether school should be cancelled or not, it's about the ignorance on both sides. We need to CARE about one another, especially because we are all apart of the same community.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
