The Pressures Of Sorority Formals

At a school like ours with a thriving Greek life, sorority and fraternity formals are, as I quote Ron Burgundy, “Kind of a big deal.”  Both are a blast, but they do differ.  Fraternity formals normally consist of cooler-crafting and beer bongs for a weekend getaway in a cool city.  Sorority formals, on the other hand, only last one night and take place at one of Columbia’s popular downtown bars.  And what really makes a sorority formal distinct is the chaos and stress that comes prior to it.

It seems silly that a sorority formal could bring such a heavy wave of pressure and stress, but it is the cold truth.  As formal season comes around, girls are thinking, Who will I bring? What will I wear? Do I need a spray tan?”  Chapters’ Facebook group posts consist of, “So…who has a date for me because I’m single AF” and, “This is my cute friend Brian, he’s a great guy if any of you need a date! He loves our house and wants to come to formal :).”  Not to mention the Excel spreadsheet sign-up of the chapter members and her date’s name.  Frequently you will find dates’ names as “myself ooo kill em” or “…..” or “Harry Styles.”  Safe to say, the struggle is real.

Once you actually reach the milestone of finding a date and choosing a dress (congrats), the stress still continues.  The day of formal is hectic for all – getting ready takes about two hours, then 20 minutes of picture-taking, then five minutes of double checking yourself in the mirror.  Eventually, you and your group of friends are finally ready to head out and meet up with your dates.  Phew, a seldom sigh of relief.

Hopefully as the night continues, all the pressure and anxiety pays off.  You and your date have a great time – you shout your sorority chants on the bus ride and then dance all night at the venue of the formal.  The next morning, you wake up and laugh with your friends about the ridiculous stories of the night before.  It was a successful formal.

These are the instances that can make us sorority girls fall into our diva clichés, but hey, sometimes we can’t help ourselves.  Formals are a big deal, a great time, and well worth its flaws.  ‘Tis now the season of formals…dun dun dun.  Good luck girls!

Three years ago, I chose to attend college in Philadelphia, approximately 360 miles away from my small town in New Hampshire. I have learned many valuable lessons away from home, and have thoroughly enjoyed my time spent in Pennsylvania. One thing that my experience has taught me, however, is that it is absolutely impossible to beat a New England summer.

Nature is beautiful (and so is math). The last one will blow your mind.

Yes, the math major is doing a math-related post. What are the odds? I'll have to calculate it later. Many people have probably learned about the Fibonacci sequence in their high school math classes. However, I thought I would just refresh everyone's memories and show how math can be beautiful and apply to physical things everywhere around us with stunning examples.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

There have been many lessons learned.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
