K-pop is my newest guilty pleasure. For the longest time I was never been able to get into it, until my roommates started listening to it. There's one thing I can't deny: K-pop is a global phenomenon, and there's a reason why. The music is banging, and the level of production in the music videos is incredible. The videos and songs are mesmerizing to watch. Plus, the Korean pop industry is incredibly large and consistently puts out great acts. These acts often flaunt flashy fashion and change their look constantly. They're always fresh and new, and they're always at the top of their game. K-pop is more than just pop music, too: it contains a mixture of all kinds of music, including R&B, hip hop, rap and pop.
In addition, K-pop fans are everywhere. You never know who may know what you're talking about, but more often than not people can recognize it.
So where to start? If you love good pop music and can appreciate the aesthetic of a well-done video, check these artists out.
1. Big Bang
This band is one of the most successful to come out of South Korea. They were the first K-pop act to crack the Billboard top 200 with their album "Alive," and they have some massive hits under their belt. Each member is a superstar in his own right.
Song recommendations: "Fantastic Baby," "Call Me Baby," "Bang Bang Bang."
2. BTS
This K-pop band sure can dance. Most (if not all) of their dance videos are incredibly mesmerizing.
Song recommendations: "Dope," "Run."
3. Exo
This band is particularly interesting because the band is large, but splits into two separate groups: Exo-K, who sings in Korean, and Exo-M, who sings in Mandarin.
Song recommendations: "Call Me Baby," "Growl," "Love Me Right."
4. 2NE1
This K-pop girl-band is pretty hardcore. And their songs are ridiculously catchy.
Song recommendations: "I Am The Best," "Gotta Be You."
5. Girls' Generation
This K-pop girl band is huge: but each member contributes to a loud, harmonic vocal combination. They're one of the most successful K-pop girl bands in history.
Song recommendations: "Lion Heart," "Gee," "I Got A Boy."
These are just the most prominent K-pop bands as far as I know -- there are dozens of acts that are as good if not better than the ones listed.
