It's finally summer, which means our Instagram and Twitter feeds as well as our Snapchat stories are going to be filled with pictures of people on vacation. Nine times out of ten, people use this opportunity to post pictures of their bodies clad in their newest, hottest swimsuits. These pictures tend to receive more likes and comments than other typical posts. A lot of times I find myself looking at these posts in envy, saying things like, "She has the perfect body. I wish I could look like that."
I know I'm not alone when it comes to feeling like this. But we shouldn't have to be envious and wish we looked a different way. We should love ourselves and our bodies regardless of what other people look like. Comparing ourselves is our ultimate demise. Besides, I already know the secret of posting the perfect swimsuit picture:
Have confidence in yourself!
The picture will be perfect because it's you. Your swimsuit picture is not her swimsuit picture or his picture posing with a surfboard. Your picture is uniquely yours, and it is gorgeous. I know it's easier said than done (trust me, I constantly get nervous about posting pictures of myself in a two piece), but we must live with no fear and not be ashamed or embarrassed about these pictures.
I promise that nobody looks at pictures you post and thinks, "Wow, she looks so fat in that picture," or, "Man, he looks way too skinny. Does he even eat?" Our insecurities are internal and if another person does happen to comment on this to you, ignore it because their opinion is irrelevant. The fact is that we are all beautiful no matter how different we look. In fact, that's what makes diversity so amazing. No two bodies look the same and should not be compared.
Even if you don't feel comfortable posting these images, that's totally okay. This message is still applicable: don't compare other people's bodies to your own. Nothing good will come from it. Try to be happy with your body and you'll slowly gain more confidence. Post pictures that make you happy, and don't listen to others who try to tell you what to post. The best pictures are the ones where people look the happiest, so flash your biggest, truest smile and that will make all the difference. Don't listen to the tiny voice in your head telling you that you're ugly because you're not. Enjoy the rest of summer and vacation and don't be afraid to show off your swimsuit in the pool or at the beach!
