Many of us can agree that this election season has seemed like something out of a joke book.
Jeb Bush looks like he dropped the hottest mixtape of 2016 before he dropped out of the race.
Hillary Clinton's campaign logo has a big red arrow that points to the right.
Ted Cruz is the Zodiac Killer.
Bernie Sanders looks like the Jewish grandpa that we never had the pleasure of having.
And lest we forget Donald Trump; a man who is basically a liberal candidate running under a republican guise – chock full of racism and general disrespect for women.
With the recent drops of John Kasich and Ted Cruz, it now seems that Donald Trump will be the presidential nominee for the Republican Party and with the race between Sanders and Clinton drawing closer and closer to an end, it is time to try and figure out where to stand and how to vote. Right now, many elections projections have the presidency split 50/50 between Trump and Clinton, but there is one very important person that they are not taking into account: Jill Stein.
The Green Party candidate took a run for the presidency in 2012 and is trying her hand at it again this election season. Now, a third party candidate has not ever won the presidency, but that does not mean that it is time to give up. In fact, it is time to take a look at this candidate and her platform and why she might have a fighting chance this election season versus other presidential hopefuls
1. On the Economy
Jill Stein, much like the Democratic candidates, is advocating for $15/hour minimum wage. She is also taking a similar stance to Vermont senator, Bernie Sanders, calling for the end of big banks and for Wall Street to accept and fix their mess-ups circa the 2008 housing market crash. What sets Stein apart from the other presidential front runners is that she places a heavy emphasis on healthy work environments that will translate into happy, healthy workers.
2. On Education
Stein calls for free K-through-University education that is accessible to all, similar to the platforms of other left wing candidates. To further that, though, her stance includes ending high stakes standardized tests, which have been proven time and time again to be ineffective. Many individuals hear the phrase “free education” and have one of two responses: “Yes!” or “’Oh hell no.” Whereas other candidates hold their stances strong (I’m looking at you, Hillary Clinton), Stein has stated that her education plan is pliable and that she is willing to create a bipartisan plan to make this work.
3. On the Environment
In being a Green Party candidate, of course Jill Stein has a plan to protect our environment. In doing this, she calls for a full transition to renewable energy by 2030 – something much more accessible than many believe. With doing this, her plan creates millions of sustainable jobs in public transit, agriculture, and conservation. This stance is nothing like those held by other party candidates. Donald Trump’s presidential campaign website mentions nothing of the environment. Hillary Clinton takes that a step further by providing potential voters with her four year plan. Bernie Sanders decided to implement the catchy hashtag, #peoplebeforepolluters, which heavily focuses on a transition away from fossil fuels.
Nobody can tell anybody how to vote, but they can provide information on a candidate that is objectively better than the alternatives. Whether you want to “Make America Great Again” (whatever that means), #feelthebern, or feel that you are Ready for Hillary, don’t forget to check out all options, because at the end of the day, #ItsInOurHands.
