They tell you in high school that you should have your life figured out by the time you're in your junior year. Then, they're kicking you out of the door your senior year and you've barely learned anything past how to correctly bubble a Scantron sheet and that mitochondria are the powerhouse of the cell. By the time you're in college, you're expected to stick with a major that pays the bills because if you're not paying the bills, you're not living. Then, you're in the middle of your college career with a major that you don't want, but are almost done with, because, hey, this is what high school taught you, right?
Wrong.
Be what you want to be.
I can't tell you how many times I went back and forth between majors before settling on something I really wanted to do. Being a theater major isn't easy by any means. It's not the easy way out, as some will tell you it is. It's hard work and dedication and being able to tell yourself that you'll "get 'em next time" when you don't book that one gig you really wanted. If it's your passion, it's a feasible job. If you're stuck in a major you don't want to be in because you want to make money instead of living your dream, make a pros and cons list. Do you really want to stick to something that makes you miserable, or do you want to do the thing that sets your heart on fire from a young age?
Don't waste time thinking that there won't be something out there for you because there will be.
Also, don't waste time thinking that there isn't enough time for you to switch your major because guess what? There will be. It doesn't matter if you have to stay in school an extra year to finish because you're working towards something you love.
Just don't let others make decisions for you.
You are the captain of your ship and if you think that your passion is what is going to make you happy for the rest of your life, no matter the consequences, then by all means, do it. Get out there and show the world what sets your heart on fire.
And if I'm not convincing enough, take it from the wise words of Tyrion Lannister himself.
