Ole Miss is known for their infamous game day experience in the Grove. If you haven’t tailgated in the Grove, trust me you are missing out. It all starts on the Friday before game day. Hundreds of red and blue trashcans fill the grove. “Trashcan Friday” Snapchat's blow up everyone’s Snapchat stories. It’s the calm before the storm. In less than 12 hours, tents will fill the grove. When I mean the entire grove is filled with tents, I mean the ENTIRE grove is filled with tents.
Game days are like no other. After getting ready in your best red and blue attire, it is time to head to the grove and tailgate. If it’s a night game, that usually means tailgating for at least 5 hours. Having never been to an Ole Miss football game before my freshman year, I was a bit nervous to tailgate.
My friends and I had no idea which tent's to go to. After making a lap around the Grove, we were welcomed into the Zebra Tent. Immediately we were greeted with hugs and handshakes and offered food and drinks. These people were complete strangers to my friends and I yet they gave us the warmest welcome.
And it wasn’t just the Zebra tent that welcomed us with open arm, but all the tents in the grove. I can attest that this is true for every game day.
Before you know it, it is time for the football players to walk down the Walk of Champions. It is an Ole Miss tradition and happens before every home game. Fans line up along the Walk of Champions and hold out their hands as the players walk through the Grove.
After the Walk of Champions, the band and cheerleaders perform on the Grove stage and then head to Vaught Hemingway Stadium. The Grove which was filled with thousands of people begins to clear out as game time approaches. Slowly people filter into the Vaught. Locking the Vaught follows and the stadium roars as fans cheer on their Ole Miss Rebels.
Ole Miss may not have the best football team but we definitely have the best game day experience in the Grove. Nothing can compare to the Grove, and if you haven’t experienced the Grove, I highly advise you do so. Hell yeah damn right you won’t regret it. Hotty Toddy and Go Rebs!
