The struggle is upon us all. In approximately a week and a half, students will be participating in the Hunger Games. Just kidding. But finals are basically the equivalent to the Hunger Games. Everyone will be in a massive panic, tears will be shed, and friendships may be destroyed. But it doesn’t have to be this painful. Here is a list of suggestions that will help you survive finals week.
1) Breathe.
Maybe don't breathe like this, but I'm sure you're tempted to. You can do this, just breathe slowly. It will minimize your anxiety and it allows you to think more clearly. Also, don't just make this attempt for 20 seconds; practice this for a few minutes and I promise it will work.
2) Make a List.
If you make a list of everything you need to do, it will help you focus more on what you need to prepare yourself. It's a gentle reminder of your priorities will give you a feeling of accomplishment after you cross off something you've done.
3) Take a Break.
I know you have a lot to study for, but we all need to take a break. Set a timer on your phone to study one subject for half an hour. When the timer goes off, set another timer for 15 minutes. In that time period, do whatever you think you need to do. Grab a cup of coffee, stretch, walk down the hallway, or check your social media. Just don't stray too long because you only have 15 minutes before you have to get right back to it.
4) Study with a Friend.
This might not be your cup of tea, because you might find yourself getting distracted. But studying with a friend can be helpful. If you don't feel like you're understanding a certain subject, you could have your friend quiz you. Or sometimes it just helps to read out loud or for someone else to explain the material to you.
5) Reward Yourself.
After you have studied all day, stressed yourself out, and marked off some of your to-do list, treat yourself to something. Go out for drinks, buy candy, take a nap (or 12), buy food in general, or do what this guy is doing. Rewarding yourself reminds you that you can do this and you've worked hard for the day.
Finals weeks can really suck, and preparing for your finals can suck even more. Hopefully these suggestions will help you get through this tough time, and maybe you'll develop a new, healthy habit because of it. Most of us are experienced by now, but we're never truly prepared for the different finals we will be taking. Don't worry--you're not alone. I'm taking my last set of finals because I'm graduating. The pressure and the struggle are on; let the Hunger Games commence!
