If you were to ask me on November 8th what was to be done about FBI Director James Comey's total misuse of justice, I would have said he needed to be fired and fed to the wolves. When James Comey sent that now infamous letter to Congress telling the oversight committee that he was "looking into the Hillary Clinton email case again," it all but signaled Hillary's fate in the national election. Comey sent this letter on Oct. 28th, just twelve days before election day. During these twelve days, the Trump campaign capitalized on this letter. Trump praisedComey for "having the guts," to release the letter. So yeah, I was pretty sore after election day with Mr. Comey. However, after watching him testify in front of Congress regarding the Trump investigation, reading things about him, and listening to how other FBI officials talked about him, I could tell that he was a man of integrity, he was just put in a difficult position, and he made a decision. The wrong decision, in my opinion, but it was a decision I think he thought was right at the time.
Tuesday, May 9th, Trump fired Comey. His administration scrambled to come up with a reason. The deputy White House Press Secretary, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, made the rounds the next morning stating that he was fired because of incompetence. When asked about the Russia/Trump investigation Comey and the FBI were working on, she stated that no one really cared about that investigation anyway. Other WH spokespeople, including the vice president, made similar comments. Soon after, the letter of termination Trump sent to Comey, got to the press and stated that Trump was, "taking the recommendation of his Deputy Attorney General," and firing Comey because of how he handled the Clinton email investigation. In an interview with NBC two days later, Trump made them all seem like liars when he told Lester Holt that he was, "going to fire Comey regardless of what the Deputy AG's recommendation was." He also said that when he was thinking about firing Comey, he thought that "this whole Russia thing, Russia and Trump thing is a hoax." Trump fired the guy who was investigating him. How is this not obstruction of justice? In the letter, Trump made sure to mention that Comey had told him on three separate occasions that Trump was not under investigation. When asked about this in his interview, Trump stated that he and Comey had dinner, he couldn't remember who set the dinner up and discussed Comey's job at the FBI. Trump also admitted that he asked Comey, explicitly, if he was under investigation and he said Comey assured him that he was not. I felt guilty watching this interview. Like I was watching someone's confessional. If he really is that good, we need to get Lester Holt to interview Casey Anthony, OJ, and Robert Blake. Later, some of Comey's FBI friends made comments to the press that Comey was hesitant to attend this dinner because he didn't want to seem partisan. He wanted to keep the FBI separate from the White House, the way it should be. They also stated that Comey denied talking about the investigation with Trump and that Trump asked Comey to "pledge his loyalty to Trump." Just let that sit for awhile. When Trump heard of this, he did the rational thing and remained silent. I'm just kidding, he tweeted that Comey better hope there aren't 'tapes' of their conversation. Intimidating a witness, you know, because that looks good on a resume.
The thing that upsets me the most is that if this were Hillary Clinton or any other Democratic president, Republicans would have already drawn up the impeachment papers and would be holding court proceedings. In the real world, Republicans won't even ask for an independent investigation, much less answer a question about the Russia/Trump investigation. What happened to these Republicans that used to talk about Russia being our number one adversary? Remember when they criticized President Obama for being "too soft" on Putin? Trump will mock and criticize every American president and the rest of the world's leaders, but he will not say anything to criticize Putin. Republicans like Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell are only after two things, power and money. You see it in their policies and the way they ignore what is happening to this country under Trump. There are too many ties from this administration to Russia not to have an investigation. The Republicans are glossing over the fact that Russia hacked our election possibly in collusion with the current President and his administration so that they can get healthcare and lower taxes for the top one percent. We need an independent investigation to put aside all partisan bias. Only then will we learn what really happened with Russia. Democrats in the house and the senate need to be more forceful and angrier. I guarantee you that the Republicans would lose their mind if the shoe were on the other foot, so to speak. There are things you can do. Go to town hall meetings, call your representative and demand an independent investigation, volunteer with a campaign. Some getting ready for the 2018 mid-terms right now. Get out there and resist. For anyone keeping count, that's two people who were fired for doing the right thing.
