The Nashville Knack: Gamal "Lunch Money" Lewis
Lunch Money Lewis

Everyone has bills to pay, and "Lunch Money" Lewis has the lyrics that everyone can relate to. How did this rap king rise to his throne? It all started in Miami, Florida with a musically talented family. His dad's passion and recognition for reggae derived Lewis's both hip and upbeat sounds. Not only did his dad show him the strings, but his mom also laid the foundation in his taste for soul and funk.

At the young age of 13-years-old Lewis decided that rapping would not only be his career, but would be the genre he pursued in music. He first started by taking influence from southern rap, such as Ludacris and Outkast. With a head full of inspiration, lyrics and drive, Lewis carved out his pathway to success. At this young of an age, Lewis was trying to impress girls and show that he could make it as a young rapper.

As Lewis grew older, his goals for his music changed. Through the struggles that he witnessed in his life, he wanted to find a way for his lyrics to connect to people in a way that everyone would get up and dance for the fact that they understood the struggles of everyday life that were mentioned in each of his songs.

Lewis came up with the song "Bills" as a representation for how many bills that flood out of the mailbox everyday. We drown in bills as adults, and the goal was to get people to laugh, dance and sing when they heard this song. The success to the song lies in the "truth and soul," said Lewis when asked how he thinks his music is so catchy.

I had to know the question that everyone asks, which was why is Gamal's nickname "Lunch Money." Of course a chuckle was given at the question. His producer Salaam Remi gave him the nickname when he was in 10th grade. He revealed to me that his old nickname was "Krypto" like kryptonite, but "Lunch Money" stuck like glue.

Before leaving, I had to ask who some of his inspirations were. Lewis told me that he related to Kid Cudi, Kanye and other rappers as he got older. He could relate to the lyrics as a rising rapper. He had no idea where his music would go and through the hard times, their music inspired him to keep going.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
